Hogsmeade is a fictional settlement in Scotland that appears in the Harry Potter novels. Hogsmeade is the only settlement in the United Kingdom inhabited only by wizards, and is located south of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Students in third year and above are permitted to visit the village, as long as they have a signed permission slip from their parent or guardian.

Hogsmeade remained unseen in the films, except for the short sequences where the train arrives at the Hogsmeade station and at the end when Harry leaves from the station in the first movie, until the release of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in 2004.

Locations in Hogsmeade

The Three Broomsticks

The Three Broomsticks is one of the local pubs in Hogsmeade. It is known for its delicious butterbeer and its beautiful owner Madam Rosmerta, who lives above the pub. The Three Broomsticks is a favorite pub among Hogwarts students and staff.

Zonko's Joke Shop

Zonko's has jokes and tricks that can "fulfill even Fred and George's wildest dreams." It closes down in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Fred and George had planned to buy the shop, but decide against it when Hogwarts' students are banned from bringing merchandise from Weasley's Wizard Wheezes into Hogwarts castle.

Hogsmeade Station

The Hogwarts Express pulls into Hogsmeade Station

of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's (or Sorcerer's) Stone.

Hogsmeade Station is the closest stop to Hogwarts; the Hogwarts Express stops here after travelling from King's Cross. Scenes involving Hogsmeade Station in the Harry Potter films were shot at the station on the North York Moors Railway, built in 1865 and virtually unchanged, that serves the village of Goathland in the North Yorkshire Moors.

The Hog's Head

The Hog's Head is another pub, which attracts more unusual customers than the Three Broomsticks. The hanging sign in front of the pub has a severed boar's head leaking blood onto the white cloth around it. The pub itself is filthy, with the floor covered under layers of dirt, the windows smeared with so much grime that they hardly let any light through. The ground floor is a single room, but there are rooms on the upper floors. Harry notes that the dirty room smells strongly of goats, and that many of the customers hide their faces. The bartender is Albus Dumbledore's brother, Aberforth.

Despite its seedy reputation, the Hog's Head has been witness to several important events. It was here that the seer Sybill Trelawney revealed the prophecy connecting Voldemort and Harry, during an interview with Albus Dumbledore for the position of Divination teacher. This is also where Hagrid buys an illegal dragon egg from Voldemort's servant in disguise. A few years later, the first meeting of Dumbledore's Army is held here. The inn was also the headquarters of the 1612 Goblin Rebellion.

Dervish and Banges

A shop that sells and repairs magical equipment, Dervish and Banges is located near the end of the High Street

Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop

Scrivenshaft's is a stationary shop located on the High Street.

Gladrags Wizardwear

Gladrags Wizardwear sells clothing. There are other branches in London and Paris. It is full of quirky merchandise, and appears to specialize in strange and unusual socks.

Madam Puddifoot's

Located on a little side street off the main High Street, this small tea shop is a favourite among Hogwarts couples out on dates. On Valentine's Day Madam Puddifoot hires floating golden cherubs to throw pink confetti on visiting couples.

Honeydukes Sweetshop

Honeydukes is one of the most famous wizarding sweetshops in the world. It sells wizard sweets of all descriptions, including Chocolate Frogs, Licorice Wands, and Cockroach Clusters. Honeydukes is particularly well known for their special kind of fudge. They also sell creamy chunks of nougat, pink squares of coconut ice, honey-colored toffees, and different kinds of chocolate.

Honeydukes sweets are sold to students on the Hogwarts Express tea trolley.

The owners, Ambrosius Flume and his wife, live in an apartment above the shop. There is a secret passage connecting the basement of the shop and the statue of a humpbacked witch on the third floor of Hogwarts, which Harry Potter uses to illegally enter Hogsmeade in the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Post Office

This place is filled with owls which are colour-coded based on how quickly they will arrive at their destination.

Shrieking Shack

This house is supposed to be the most haunted building in Britain. The Hogwarts ghosts avoid this place. Fred and George Weasley once tried to get in, but failed. When James Potter and his friends were in school, Remus Lupin used this house during his monthly transformations to stay isolated from the students, being brought there every month by Madam Pomfrey.
