A Service Pistol is any handgun (revolver or semi-automatic pistol) issued to military personnel.

History

Prior to the introduction of cartridge-loading arms, there was little standardisation with regards to the sidearms carried by military personnel, although it had been important for officers, artillery crew, and the like to have a means of defending themselves, especially as it was not always practical for them to have a full-length rifle or carbine.
