Interstate 264

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Jnc (talk | contribs) at 16:34, 15 October 2004 (There are two I-264's...). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Interstate 264 is the name given to two completely separate highways. One is a spur off Interstate 64 in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, described here. The other is a loop around Louisville, Kentucky, the Henry Watterson Expressway, described below.

The Henry Watterson Expressway

The Henry Watterson Expressway, also known as the Shawnee Expressway, is a short highway (23 miles long) that runs an open circle around downtown Louisville, Kentucky and New Albany, Indiana. The highway begins at I-71, north-east of Louisville, and runs counterclockwise around the city, crossing the Ohio River at the Sherman-Minton Bridge and continuing in Indiana, encircling New Albany (effectively a part of Louisville).

History

In 1948, a bypass named US 60 was built between Shelbyville Road and Dixie Highway in Louisville. It was incorporated into the Interstate Highway System in 1956. The highway was completed in 1974, and in 1984 the road was named after the journalist and editor Henry Watterson. The highway was reconstructed in the 1990s.
