Edwin Herbert Land (May 7, 1909 - March 1, 1991) was an American scientist and inventor.

While studying chemistry at Harvard, he invented the first filters capable of polarizing light, called Polaroid. The initial major application was for sunglasses, but it has found many applications, for instance as an important component of LCDs.

He founded Polaroid Corporation and invented the instant image Land Camera which bears his name.

He helped design the optics for the revolutionary Lockheed U-2 spy plane.

Later, he developed the Retinex theory of color vision.
