Ultraman Mebius

Ultraman Moebius (Urutoraman Mebiusu - ウルトラマンメビウス) is the 16th series in the Ultraman franchise, it also celebrates the 40th anniversary of the franchise. Starting out with a new rookie Ultra who is sent to Earth by Ultra Father, this series pays homage to the past while trying to set up its own original stories as well.

Story

Moebius is the youngest of all the Ultra brothers and has a lot to live up to. He is chosen as the new protector of the planet Earth. This series is set in the same universe as the original timeline, when Mebius first appears to fight a monster, it is mentioned that this is the first time an Ultraman has appeared in 25 years. Unlike most Ultraman, who find a human host, Moebius and the human who portrays him are one in the same. Under the guise of Mirai Hibino, Moebius joins Crew GUYS, the monster attack force of this series.

At the start of episode 1, all of the original team members of GUYS, save for Ryu (although it is eventually revealed that another survived), are killed off in their first monster battle. Mirai gathers a group of people he meets in an evacuation to join the new GUYS because he feels they have the right heart to be on GUYS.

Characters

GUYS

Crew GUYS (Guards for UtilitY Situation) - Crew GUYS are the monster attack team of the series. They have the most advanced technology of any of the past teams in the original universe. Their special weapons are the Gun Phoenix, an advanced jet attacker that can fly at supersonic speeds, and the capsule monsters. The capsule Monsters are at first miniature versions of monsters from previous Ultra series, but when Mebius is in trouble, they are made to grow large and help Mebius defeat his enemies.

• Mirai Hibino (ヒビノ ミライ Hibino Mirai) - The main character of the series and a member of GUYS. Mirai Hibino may look like a human, but he is Moebius himself, not a host. He is a rookie and it shows—in his first battle as Mebius (against a monster named Dinozaur), Ryu scorned him for failing to protect the city and using buildings as shields. He is an outgoing person and likes to make friends and help people. It is because of him that the current members of team GUYS are members. Moebius' personal symbol is the infinity sign.

• Ryu Aihara (アイハラ リュウ Aihara Ryū) - Aihara is the sole surviving member of the original team GUYS. When a monster first appeared, GUYS-Japan was sent to take care of the beast. This was the first monster attack in nearly 20 years and no one was prepared for what would come in the battle. The monster easily defeated Aihara's comrades, and just as Aihara and his captain were about to be killed, his captain ejected Aihara from their jet and the captain then died in a suicide attack on the beast. Aihara is a good man, but has a cold exterior after what has happened to his friends. When Mirai first meets him, Aihara is reciting the Ultra pledge and Mirai joins in as well. Later on during Moebius' first battle, Aihara scorns him for failing to defend the city and shielding himself with buildings, then Aihara scorns himself for failing to protect his friends. He feels responsible for all the new members of GUYS and tries his best to protect them.

• Marina Kazama (カザマ マリナ Kazama Marina) - She is a former motorcyle racer, she had dreams of becoming one of the first internationally known women in the sport. She still tries to keep up with her practices and team at the same time that she is a member of GUYS. She seems like the older sister of the group and tends to look after the other members a lot. Unfortunately, she had to spend most of episode 4 with her arm in a sling after Maquette Monster Mikulas dropped her on a tent while de-materializing.

• George Ikaruga (イカルガ ジョージ Ikaruga Jōji) - Ikaruga is a former all star soccer player, though he broke his leg for a time and had to sit out of his games for a few years. At the start of the series, a doctor tells him that his knee is finally well enough for him to play football again. Ikaruga feels a need to live up to the image that was created for him, he's a celebrity and was often looked down upon by his former teammates who think that he has "sold out". He joins GUYS in order to find some form of purpose in his life.

• Konomi Amagai (アマガイ コノミ Amagai Konomi) - Konomi is a sweet and kind young lady, she used to be a daycare teacher before joining GUYS. Her students cried when she left, but she felt that being a part of GUYS would be the best way for her to be able to protect all of the children that she once taught. It is because of her that all of the future members of GUYS meet up in episode 1, when they try to rescue the rabbits at Konomi's daycare center. She briefly quits GUYS in episode 4 after she scolds herself for lack of valor. Mirai tried cheering her up, remembering how Ryuu had scorned him for collateral damage after his fight with Dinozaur. She is the only member of the group who wears a mini-skirt and the only member who has to wear glasses (once, when Konomi dropped the glasses in the Phoenix Nest's swimming pool, Mirai used the glasses to imitate Ultraseven's transformation pose). She briefly tries copntacts in episode 16 but switches back to wearing glasses at the end of the episode.

• Teppei Kuze (クゼ テッペイ Kuze Teppei) - Teppei is the heir to a fortune and is always being followed after by his mother. She thinks he isn't ready to face the world yet and still treats him like a child and tries to arrange his life the best she can. He joins GUYS to gain independence from his mother and from the social well knowings that he is supposed to learn. He wants to protect people and be his own man, not having to rely on others to protect him.

• Commander Shingo Sakomizu (サコミズ シンゴ隊長 Sakomizu Shingo Taichō) - Commander of new GUYS. For reorganization and instruction of GUYS, he assumes the position.

• Aide Toriyama (トリヤマ補佐官 Toriyama Hosakan) - The leader of the Japanese branch of Crew GUYS, he issues orders to GUYS and gets frantic with joy whenever they accomplish a mission.

• Secretary Aide Maru (マル補佐官秘書 Maru Hosakan Hisho) - Toriyama's secretary, he follows Toriyama around a lot, often correcting his speech mistakes.

• Yuki Misaki (ミサキ ユキ Misaki Yuki) - The acting general of GUYS, she reports monsters to GUYS.

• Kazuya Serizawa (セリザワ カズヤ Serizawa Kazuya) - Former commander of GUYS. When Dino Zaur invaded to the earth, Ryu was made to secede from a fighter plane. And he rushed at Dino Zaur by fighter plane. However, just before dying, Tsurugi united with him. After killing Dino Zaur Reverse, although he was asked by Mirai whether he should return to GUYS, he refused. He entrusts Ryu to Mirai, and he went away.

Ultraman

• Ultraman Moebius (ウルトラマンメビウス Urutoraman Mebiusu) - rookie of the space garrison who came to the earth in response to the instruction of Father of Ultra. He became a human being called Mirai Hibino and is living. He change as Ultraman Moebius of true form by Moebius Brace given from Father of Ultra. He seems to have received guidance from Ultraman Taro.

• Ultraman Hikari (Ultraman Light) (ウルトラマンヒカリ Urutoraman Hikari) - He was an excellent scientist who belonged to Space Science Technology Bureau. The true identity of Hunter Knight Tsurugi, sans armor and with Star Marks (Medals of honor to the Ultra Race) on his chest similar to Zoffy. After Tsurugi sacrifices himself to save Moebius, the Mother of Ultra destroys the Arb Gear and restores Hikari to his former self, coming back to Moebius in the midst of his fight with Reverse. Since then, he operates independent from GUYS with Serizawa acting as his host. His name comes from Ryu of Crew GUYS to the dismay of the rest of the team at first before Mirai vouches for him. After he was able to escape to Gromite, Zoffy appeared before him. Although Zoffy said, "Return to the country of light", he refused. And, when he told the will to stay in the earth, Zoffy gave a little postponement and went away.

Enemies

• Knight Hunter Tsurugi (Sword the Hunter Knight)(ハンターナイト ツルギ Hantā Naito Tsurugi) - Hunter Knight Tsurugi first appeared in episode 5 and appeared to help defeat a Sadora that Moebius himself could not. Not much is known about the character, but it is said that he has a great hatred for Bogal and will do whatever he can to defeat them on his own. Also, Tsurugi, like Ultraman Agul, cares solely on defeating the monsters, and does not care about the collateral damage that ensues, which immediately results in déjà vu for Moebius in episode 7, reminding him about the collateral damage for which Ryu had berated him in episode 1. Tsurugi told Ryu by episode 9 that the body of Serizawa was taken, when Serizawa rushed at Dino Zaur by fighter plane. Tsurugi gave the former leader of GUYS a chance to live when he merged with him. He dies, after killing Bogal Monse together with Moebius. Then, although Tsurugi said to Mother of Ultra, "Let me die", Serizawa did not desire to die. And Arb Gear was destroyed by the power of Mother of Ultra and he returned to the normal state of being.

• Mystery Woman (Bogal Human) (謎の女 (ボガールヒューマン) Nazo no Onna (Bogāru Hyūman)) - She came to Earth to aid the monsters attacking the planet and is actually a monster herself. Her true form is Bogal the Higher dimension Predator. Her aliform acts like a Venus flytrap, and she has an elastic tongue. Her human form is dressed completely in white and has a reptile-like tongue. She talks in a lizard-like voice, can teleport and can move at super-speed. A planet called Arb is destroyed, then she is chased by Tsurugi. She is a bit of a coward, as she always teleports when Tsurugi attacks her. She causes Moebius much trouble. Bogal evolved into Bogal Monse in episode 9. If Bogal Monse dies, it will cause mighty explosion. After fitting into the strategy of shutting up into electromagnetism barrier of GUYS, it is challenged to a decisive battle by Moebius and Tsurugi. It falls in response to ray of Moebius and Tsurugi after a fierce fight. Then Moebius and Tsurugi are going to escape from barrier, Bogal stands up. However, Bogal stuck in Tsurugi with Knight Beam Blade and explodes in barrier.

Information on Future

• Hikari entrusts the Knight Brace to Mebius, and disappears from the story for a while.
• The Knight Brace appears on the Mebius Brace. A golden line enters Moebius's chest and shoulder. And, form change is done to Mebius Brave. It appears in episode 18.
• The episode of the crew of a space freighter called Hiroto Ban is in episode 21 and 22. The space freighter went missing by distortion of the space of universe before half a year. And why Mirai resembles Hiroto has an unknown but serious secret.
• Taro and Zoffy will appear from September~October. Other Ultra Brothers will appear.
• Mebius will form upgrade further from Moebius Brave by friendship with GUYS in October (Mebius Infinity?).
• Windom form upgrades with element capsule to Fire Windom.
• Yapool appears. And Velocron and Vakishim are also revitalized.

• Tyrant will be revitalized.
• Taro will appear to defeat Tyrant with Mebius. He will alsot start to train Mebius in becoming a better fighter.
• Mebius will be killed by Jumbo King in episode 30. Ultraman King together with Hikari will revive him and give him a new weapon to defeat Jumbo King.
• Alien Hipportio will return. Ace will help Mebius in defeating this old enemy.
• About half way through the series, Zoffy confronts Hikari, who will be turning back into Tsurugi slowly as the series progresses.
• Zoffy's real human host is revealed to be Yuki Misaki aster being badly beaten by the revitalized Tsurugi.

Miscellanea

• Shunji Igarashi, the actor who portrays Mebius/Mirai said that he wanted to perform the voice of Moebius. The only other actor to provide the voice of their Ultra is Ultra Seven's Kouji Moritsugu. Usually, it's another voice actor altogether who provides the Ultra with his voice.

• Shin Ishikawa, the actor who plays Kazuya, Tsurugi's host, also played Shin Kazamatsuri/Kamen Rider Shin in Shin Kamen Rider: a Prologue.

• The jets used by the original GUYS in episode 1 appear to be based off of the Beetles/VTOLs from the original Ultraman, and even use vintage sound effects.

• There are models of the Beetle/VTOL and Ultra Hawk in the GUYS command room.

• The pose that Mirai shows Konomi in an early episode with her glasses (after he recovered them from the bottom of a pool) is Ultra Seven's henshin pose (right down to the energetic "DUA" that he yells).

• The "beak" of the GunPhoenix arguably bears a striking resemblence to that of the Varidreen from Himitsu Sentai Goranger.

Film adaption

A theatrical film adaption, entitled Ultraman Moebius & Ultraman Brothers, will be released in Japan on September 16th.

Story: It is an occurrence of 20 years ago. Ultraman, Ultra Seven, Ultraman Jack, and Ultraman Ace were fighting with U-Killersaurus which goes to the earth in the universe. After intense fighting, U-Killersaurus was sunk into the offing in Kobe and sealed with Final Cross Shield. However they used up the power of light by Final Cross Shield, and it became impossible to change to Ultraman. The present after that. Moebius is fighting with monster and alien on the earth. However, the alien union which is going to revive U-Killersaurus was approaching the earth.

Side Story

Hikari called "HIKARI SAGA" to which this is distributed by online is side story of a hero's Moebius.

SAGA 1-Tragedy of Arb: One M78 nebula person was going for investigation of the planet of the miracle named Arb. When he came down on the ground which shines, the ground in which crystal has grown spread out. When he was walking along the ground, crystal gathered in the air, it became person-like shape, and crystal told him that we were Arb. Arb asks whether he is the space garrison of the country of light. However, he said that he was a scientist. Although he made a decision to live by Arb, Arb refused. The existence to which Arb threatens peace to this planet in prophecy of Tsurugi(The existence which is dwelling in the ground of Arb) is approaching, and Arb is ruined. Arb recommends leaving from Arb. However, Arb has entrusted hope to section 1 of prophecy that a brave man appears. Then, he flies away because he becomes the brave man of the prophecy.

He came down to the red planet which has a conic rock innumerably. When he looked for a certain man and was walking along the rocky mountain, the man who wears red robe was sitting. Although it says that the man knows whereabouts, the trial which calms a storm before that is given to him. When he extinguished the storm by ray, there was no man. Then, Ultraman King appeared from back. King talked about Ultraman to him. And King gave Knight Brace to his right arm. However, King warned "Don't forget the clear heart". And he flew away to Arb again.

However, monster of prediction appeared in Arb and destruction had already started. Arb is eaten by the monster although Arb makes electric shock a monster. Although he is going to use Knight Brace by anger, use is forbidden from King. However, although he ignores and fights the warning of King, he is pushed to monster. Barely, although light bullet of one shot is applied to a monster, the monster has escaped.

If he has cried on the ruined ground, the groan of ruined Arb has been heard. And the deep-seated grudge went into his body, and became Arb Gear. And he became Hunter Knight Tsurugi, determines to revenge a monster, and threw away the heart. Then, Tsurugi goes to many planets, and the clues of a monster are collected, and it becomes clear from Alien Fanton that the name of a monster is Bogal. And Tsurugi goes to the earth which Bogal ruins next...
