The naval Battle of Preveza took place on 28 September 1538 near Preveza in northwest Greece. It was an important victory for the Ottoman fleet commanded by Khair ad Din (Barbarossa) over a Spanish-Venetian fleet commanded by the great Genoese admiral Andrea Doria fleet, despite the allies' 5:1 advantage in numbers. Seven allied ships were captured. This battle made Ottoman Turkey the leading power in the Mediterranean Sea until its defeat at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. Some historians argue that it was the greatest naval victory in the Turkish navy's history.
