Players will have the ability to play as Mario, Luigi, Wario, or Yoshi. Each character will have unique abilities and movesets, as in Super Mario Bros. 2. For example, Yoshi will have a "hover jump", much like in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Luigi will have an extra-high backflip.
There are 150 stars in the game -- an addition of 30 from the original. Some stars are restricted to certain characters. At least two new courses have been revealed, excluding multiplayer courses and minigames.
