Mel Tottoh (born 16 July 1956 in Manchester, England) is a former footballer. Tottoh is famous to football fans for playing just one game for Preston North End against Scunthorpe United on November 5 1985.
As one of the leading local parks players in the Preston area Tottoh was called upon to take his place on the bench due to injuries to much of Preston's squad. Tottoh therefore had to finish his shift early at BAE Preston and make his way to Preston's Deepdale stadium for the match.
The other interesting thing regarding this game was the fact that it was to kick-off at 2pm on the Tuesday afternoon which was unheard of at that particular time due to Preston's floodlights being condemned as unsafe. Because of this only 2007 supporters turned up for the game making it Preston North End's lowest ever league gate, a record that still stands to this day. Having come on as a substitute Tottoh made little impact with Preston losing 1-0 to Scunthorpe United. This was a particularly dark period for Preston with the club finishing the season in second bottom place and therefore facing the stigma of having to apply for re-election.Whilst Mel never again wore the famous white jersey of Preston North End (he went on to play for Accrington Stanley) the club did indeed bounce back from there dark period to again become one of the top clubs outside the English Premier League
