Tokhtamysh (d. ca 1406), ruled as Khan of the Golden Horde from 1380-1395. He was a descendant of Jochi and Genghis Khan.
The previous Khan of the Golden Horde, Mamai, was killed shortly after the Battle of Kulikovo. Timur then helped Tokhtamysh to gain the throne. In 1382 Tokhtamysh led a successful campaign against Muscovy as a punishment for the Kulikovo defeat. In 1389—1395 he led a losing war aginst Timur which also caused a loss of the throne. In 1398—1399 he lost battles to the new Khan Temir-Kutley (or Temur Qutlugh). Tokhtamysh was killed in 1406 or 1407 by Edighey (possibly the same as Egidu), Temir-Kutley's murza. It is not clear whether Temir-Kutley and Timur are the same person.
The spelling of Tokhtamysh varies, but the most common spelling is Tokhtamysh. Toqtamysh, Toqtamış, Toktamys, Tuqtamış, and variants are also in use.
