Thorpe St Andrew is a suburb of Norwich in Norfolk, England. It is situated about two miles east of the city centre, and outside the city boundary. It constitutes a civil parish which had a population of 13,762, which includes famous people such as Chris Bennet and used to be the home of Langley School's first cricket team captain Harry Lightfoot, according to the 2001 census, and is the administrative headquarters of the Broadland district council.
Parts of the original village can still be seen along the Yarmouth Road leading out of Norwich. Features here include St Andrews Parish Church, the former parish infants school, the Riverside Public House and the multi-gabled Red Lion Public House (now a take-away restaurant).
In recent years, Thorpe St. Andrew has expanded eastwards in the shape of the Dussindale housing development.
Thorpe St Andrew is also the home of Thorpe Players amateur dramatics group who meet and perform at the Roxley Hall (on Thorpe Road).
Thorpe St Andrew has also just become the home for Norwichs' new radio station: 99.9FM Radio Norwich, the studios are based near Thorpe River Green and the station started broadcasting on the 29th June 2006.
Thorpe St. Andrew the town?
It was announced on the 4th June 2006 that Thorpe St. Andrew Parish Council would be taking a vote to decide whether to make Thorpe St. Andrew a town. Being a town would not change anything for the residents but would probably give the council more funding.
With a population of 15,000 Thorpe is bigger than most of the Norfolk market towns nearby so it would make sense for this to happen, another point to note is that Thorpe contains three business parks, a very large supermarket, three schools and many shops, pubs and hotels.
The vote is likely to be put forward later this year and if all goes well, by 2007 Thorpe St. Andrew will have its own Town Mayor and Deputy Town Mayor!
