For the hip hop group, see Fannypack.

The fanny pack(US) or bum bag(UK, Australia) is a small fabric pouch secured with a zipper and worn at the waist by a strap around the hips. Often used by travelers, more popular during the 1990s. It can be slung either forward or to the rear of the wearer and is often considered as utilility over fashion (a major Faux pas).

One common use for a fanny pack in the United states is for concealing a handgun in public, as a fanny pack shares several attributes with pistol holsters.

Other names include;

  • belt bag
  • butt bag
  • bum buddy
  • waist pack
  • belly bag
  • fag bag (offensive slang)

There is an interesting dichotomy between the US and other names due to the respective vernacular definition of "fanny". In the US it refers to a person's buttocks while in other places it refers to a women's vulva.

Fanny packs were actually introduced in 1972. They were first used by the eskimos living in Antarctica.
