The plot revolves around fashionable teenager Raven Baxter and her schemes to get herself, her friends, or family members, out of a wacky situation, usually by using her psychic powers and her skills as a master of disguise.

Produced by Brookwell McNamara Entertainment for the first three seasons, the show became a production of Warren & Rinsler Productions in association with That So Productions for its fourth seasons. The show finished production on January 2006.

Production

The program was first aired in the United States on January 17, 2003 - however, the first season had been broadcast in the United Kingdom during 2002. The program is also popular in many other countries; these include Canada, Australia, Europe, New Zealand and Asia. It is the first highest rated Disney series [citation needed] and the longest-running Disney Channel program as of 2006.

There has been 100 episodes of That's So Raven – the show's popularity allowed it to exceed the Disney "65 episode policy". The only other Disney shows to achieve this are Dumbo's Circus (which aired 120 episodes on Disney Channel between 1985 and 1995), DuckTales, and more recently, Kim Possible.

Story structure

File:Ravenpromo1.jpg
A season four promotional image.

Each episode is broken up into different segments as Raven or other characters deal with situations. Raven is primarily the focus of the story, and the episodes also focus on whatever visions she experiences. The visions usually involve whatever Raven is thinking about at a particular point in time. After the visions occur, one of several things will happen: the vision will come true irrespective of any attempts to prevent it, Raven tries to stop it only to make it come true (a paradox), or the outcome is affected in some way.

Some characters have disappeared without explanation, such as Mr. Lawler, who provided comic relief in seasons one and two, but did not make any appearance in seasons three and four. There are characters that appeared at least once as an important role, but never returned. Most notably, T'Keyàh Crystal Keymàh, who played Raven's mother Tanya, departed (see Disappearing memorable characters).

For the fourth season, the season ends Raven-Symoné became producer of her own show, helping out more for the creative ideas on That's So Raven. In the fourth season of the show, her character Raven Baxter, an aspiring fashion designer, achieves the dream of a lifetime when she begins working for fictional fashion designer Donna Cabonna (played by Anne-Marie Johnson of JAG and In Living Color fame). Production of the fourth season began in 2005, and ended in early 2006. The fourth season premiered on President's Day (February 20) with the episode Raven, Sydney, And The Man.

Main characters

File:Thatsoraven4.jpg
Raven-Symoné as Raven Baxter in a season two promotion.
Raven Lydia Baxter (played by Raven-Symoné) is the main character of the series. Raven is a teenage girl who possesses psychic powers to see into the future. She is an aspiring fashion designer. Her best friends are Eddie Thomas and Chelsea Daniels. Raven has one sibling, Cory.
In the show, Raven's psychic powers allow her to catch a glimpse of the future. This is characterized by her going into a blank stare, and the TV audience sees the vision. She has no real control over the visions, but the visions usually involve whatever she's thinking about at the moment she gets a vision. Raven learned that her Grandma Viv (Jenifer Lewis) is also a psychic, but her own mother is not, meaning that the psychic power skipped a generation.
Raven is very self-absorbed in almost everything she does; however, when it matters the most, she is always there for her friends and family. In addition to being an aspiring fashion designer, she is also a master of disguise, a skill that comes in handy mainly because of the trouble her visions can cause. She spent a day working as an assistant teacher and has a club at the community center where she teaches Sydney how to become a fashion designer. She has only had one major boyfriend Devon Carter (Lil' J), though has been seen with several different boyfriends throughout the seasons. It has also been noted that Raven is highly allergic to mushrooms; they cause her face and hands to swell to immense proportions, and they may even mess up her visions, as noted in "Vision Impossible".
Raven has also been seen with a Psychic cold which allows her not only to sneeze, but to read your mind. In that same episode Raven's grandmother (father's side) has been seen and we know that she thinks her grandmother Viv is a loonatic because she is psychic too. She soon realizes that Raven is Psychic too and admits that she misjudged Grandma Viv.
Her main nemeses are Alana (Adrienne Bailon), Bianca (Erica Rivera), and their posse, Muffy (Ashley Drane) and Loca (Andrea Edwards). Her new nemesis is Tiffany (Jodi Shilling), who is competing with Raven to be Donna's favorite assistant. Like Alana, sometimes Tiffany and Raven work together to accomplish a goal.

Edward "Eddie" Thomas is a best friend of Raven Baxter and Chelsea Daniels. He is an aspiring rapper and is a member of the school's basketball team. He spent a day as a furniture salesman and sold the Baxter's furniture for some new Italian furniture. He teaches rap to young children at the local community center. He once taught Cory how to rap to impress a girl but it ended up with all the girls in his class except that one particular girl.
He has had one girlfriend, Chantel (Drew Sidora) and also unexpectedly had a relationship with Loca. He later became Raven's temporary boyfriend in "When 6021 Met 4267", although they decided that they just wanted to be friends. He has been seen to give Raven's younger brother Cory bad advice over relationships.

Anneliese van der Pol as Chelsea Daniels alongside Raven-Symone in Season Three.
Chelsea Ophelia Daniels is a best friend of Raven Baxter and Eddie Thomas. She is known to be a vegetarian and an environmentalist; she also works at the Doggy Daycare Center. She also spent a day working as a police officer and runs the "Whale Club" at the community center. Most of the time her character is portrayed as dimwitted, though it has been seen for Chelsea to do something complicated which her friends never thought she could do.
She is an experienced bull rider and ping-pong player. She also holds the world record for paddleball. She also ran for class president against Ben Sturky. She has had quite a few boyfriends during the series including Jake (Ricky Ullman) as seen in "On Top of Old Oakey", Sam (Mike Erwin) in "A Dog By Any Other Name", Ben (Travis Van Winkle) in "Double Vision", and Danny (Ben Ziff) in "Save The Last Dance" and "When 6021 met 4267". She is also a pet lover and does not like to harm animals–however, in "My Big Fat Pizza Party", she stated that "pepperoni was good".
File:Corybaxter.JPG
Kyle Massey as Cory Baxter in Season Three.
Cory Baxter is Raven's only sibling. His best friends are Larry (David Henrie) and William (Frankie Ryan Manriquez).
During his 13th birthday, he had a Bro-Mitzvah in order to obtain money, but he later donated that money to the community center; he did this despite happening to be very wealthy. He is usually involved with get-rich-quick schemes, most of which fail due to his conscience. He appears to be very wealthy. He also knows how to do the fictional "Yak Dance of Creponia", purely by accident; Raven entered him into a dance school in order to meet one of her favorite singers, Pressure. As seen in the episode "Test of Friendship", he has been a fluent Spanish speaker since the age of ten.
He had a crush on Chelsea Daniels in season one and the early part of season two. In seasons three and four he had a girlfriend Cindy (Jordyn Coleman). In season four, Cory's new rival, The Juicer, is introduced in "Juicer Consequences".
Victor Baxter is Raven and Cory's father. He is a chef. He appeared on local television displaying his cooking skills in "Wake Up, Victor" and on national television in "Captain Cook-off". In season two, he became the owner of a restaurant called The Chill Grill and a mobile spin-off, The Chill Grill on Wheels. He also had directed a commercial for the Chill Grill starring Eddie Thomas and Chelsea Daniels. His rival is Leonard Stevenson, who always managed to beat him in cooking class at school.
Tanya Baxter is Raven and Cory's mother. She loves her children and just wants to spend time with them. Her previous jobs include being an English teacher; in season one she appeared as a housewife, and in one episode she became a substitute teacher at Bayside High School (the fictional school in which Raven, Eddie, and Chelsea attend). In season two, she became hostess at her husband Victor's restaurant, The Chill Grill.
In season three, Tanya decided to attend law school. Keymáh left the show at the end of season three and her character was written out (it was said that Tanya had travelled to Britain to study law; see Disappearing memorable characters for more details).

Recurring characters

That's So Raven has had many recurring characters - most of whom have stayed in the show for all four seasons; however, some have only appeared in two or three episodes.

Disappearing memorable characters

  • Tanya Baxter (T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh) left the show after the episode "Food for Thought". She has been mentioned many times since, but has not been seen since. Instead, the characters refer to her as having travelled to Britain to study law further. Despite her disappearance, Keymáh was still credited for the remaining six episodes of season three. On Keymáh's official website, [1] it states that she agreed to play Tanya Baxter for three seasons only. However, some state that Keymáh left the show after creative differences.[2]
  • Mr. Lawler (Wesley Mann), a popular recurring character during seasons one and two of That's So Raven, was neither seen nor mentioned again after the episode "Clothes Minded". However, in season four, Raven and Chelsea were standing outside Principal Lawler's office.
  • Ben "Stinky" Sturky (Joshua Harto) disappeared after three episodes in the first season. This may be because of the fact that in season one, Raven attended Bayside Junior High and in seasons two through four she goes to Bayside High School - Ben Sturky presumably would have gone to a different high school.
  • Alana (Adrienne Bailon) disappeared in season three because, according to Muffy, "she was so bad, she got sent to military school". She was replaced by Bianca, who was "so bad, she got kicked out of military school"). However, Bianca (Erica Rivera) herself disappeared after two episodes in season three and was never seen nor mentioned again. Muffy and Loca however, are from Alana's and Bianca's gang and is usually present in the newer episodes, but are in the episodes by themselves. For this reason, some believe that Bianca's gang is no more. Maybe Bianca was sent back to military school or perhaps was transferred, it is never explained but Bianca is clearly no longer in Raven's school.

Disappearing significant others

  • In the pilot episode of That's So Raven entitled "Smell of Victory", Eddie begins dating a girl named Crystal (played by Christel Khalil). She is neither seen nor mentioned again until the season two episode "The Dating Shame", when Crystal along with her friend Claudia compete against Raven and Chelsea to go out with a guy named Chad in the fictional dating show Terma-Date. The only other time Crystal was mentioned was during the beginning of the third season episode, "Point of No Return", when Raven, Eddie, and Chelsea all talk about Crystal's upcoming party.
  • In the episode "Mr. Perfect", Raven dates a guy named André. During the course of that episode, they break-up, but later get back together. After that episode, André is neither seen nor mentioned again.
  • In the episode "Double Vision", Chelsea begins to date a guy named Ben who has the same psychic powers as Raven. For some reason, he does not appear in any future episodes and is not mentioned again.
  • Though Stanley, the neighbor who made various attempts to get Raven to love him, is still present in some episodes, Sierra, Raven's neighbor is never seen again after only two episodes.

Episodes

References

  • In "That's So Suite Life of Hannah Montana", Cody (Cole Sprouse) mimics the look when Raven gets a vision.
  • In the episode "Soup to Nuts", Raven eats soup that makes her see weird television spoofs involving her. One of them was the music video for the song "Some Call It Magic" - this is actually a real video to a song Raven-Symoné recorded. Raven Baxter then replies "What?!? I got a video?!?", which is obviously breaking the fourth wall.
  • When Eddie claims himself that he has psychic powers then has a television contract, Raven asks who would watch a show about a teenage psychic. Raven then turns, smirking, towards the camera, again breaking the fourth wall.

Filming mistakes

  • When the exterior of the Baxter house is showing the porch, the walkway goes to the right. But when the house is shown from the street, the porch has a stairway that goes to the left.
  • At the end of the episode "If I Only Had a Job", Raven takes hold of Cory's hat and wiggles it around. In the next shot Raven is seen holding on to Cory's cheek instead.
    • In the episode "If I Only Had A Job", Raven has a vision of Victor opening a restaurant called Baxter's Place; in the next season, the family restaurant is called The Chill Grill.
    • In the episode "If I Only Had a Job", the neon sign above the kitchen table reads Baxter's Place, but in the episode "Teach Your Children Well" (when Raven and Tanya are talking) the sign can be seen behind them reading Victor's Place. The sign has changed because in the episode "Campaign in the Neck", Eddie and Cory threw a baby diaper into the Baxter's Place sign and then it broke.
  • In the episode "Teach Your Children Well" when Raven has a wild ride on Tanya's desk, on the shots when she jumps onto and goes upstairs of the school, her sleeves are down, but on the next shot when she goes downstairs, her sleeves are up, then at the next shot when she's outside and crashes, her sleeves are down again
  • In the episode "Mismatch Maker", Victor goes to Cory's room to show him that the posters were thrown in the trash; the poster says Corey Baxter, rather than the correct spelling of Cory.
  • In the episode "Unhappy Medium", Cory brings in an elephant for Victor so he can advertise for The Chill Grill. In the living room, the pictures have disappeared.
  • In the episode "To See or Not to See", Raven's psychic grandmother Viv visits. Viv and Cory fight with lightsaber-esque trinkets (like in Star Wars). They step out of the living room and into the kitchen, leaving the door into the living room open. All of the furniture, rugs, and paintings are gone, leaving the room empty. However, in the next shot, the room is as normal.
    • Raven's maternal psychic grandmother is credited as Viv Baxter - this would mean that Viv is Victor's mother. However, it is Tanya's mother that is the psychic. In a following episode, though, Victor's mother (Loretta Baxter) makes an appearance.
    • Both of Raven's grandmothers have appeared in the series, and her grandfathers are presumed to be dead.
  • In the episode "Wake Up Victor", Raven and Cory argue - a studio camera is reflected and seen.
  • In the episode "Driving Miss Lazy" , Cory takes the bottle of cologne from Stanley. After that Stanley says, "I can sell it to you for about 40 bucks". When Stanley says the line, he is holding a bottle; the shots following it only has Cory holding a bottle.
  • In "Extreme Cory", Razor (Brandon Smith), a member of the "X-Squad", skates on a ramp; it is clearly an older, and much taller stunt-man.
  • In the episode "Checkin' Out", Raven and Donna Cabonna are trying to figure out what they are going to do when their photographer Pistache is in Milan - Pistache can clearly been seen waiting at the door.
  • In the episode "Dues and Don'ts", Donna Cabonna refers to her dog Coco as a male; however, in "Be Prepared", Raven refers to the dog as a she.
  • When Donna Cabonna is upstairs in the episode "Adventures in Boss Sitting", she makes clothing out of Raven's bed spread and puts them on Chealsea and Eddie; however, in the next scene they come downstairs and they aren't wearing the clothes. If they took it off or kept it on , they never made it clear
    • In the same episode, Raven picks up the extra bed spreads; Donna Cabonna clearly could not have made so much clothing with the bed spreads.
  • In the episode "That's So Not Raven", Chelsea is deep in thought during one scene - Raven looks at her wrist "for the time"; however, she is not wearing a watch.
  • In the episode "Juicer Consequences", Chelsea's backpack appears during her conversation with Raven, and then disappears in the next shot.
  • In the episode "Mad Hot Cotillion", The Juicer comes to Cory to threaten him. Cory's locker is open, but in the next shot it is closed. In the shot following that, his locker is open, and the door continues to vary between open and closed throughout the scene.
  • In the episode "Separation Anxiety" Raven breaks two eggs on Cory's plate, leaving them crushed and both broken. When they return to the shot, one egg is broken and one is not. This continuously switches back and forth.
  • In "When 6021 met 4267", when Chelsea and Danny Warren come into Raven's party and say hi to her, Raven is wearing a flower necklace aroung her neck. After Stanley and Cory come into the party disguised and start to dance with Loca, Raven is not wearing the necklace anymore in all the scenes after that.
  • In the episode "Opportunity Shocks", Corey has a tablespoon of guacamole dip that he "accidentally" dumps on Presto Jones' jacket, only to test his grandmother's secret recipe for the disappearance of stains. When Cory is almost taken away by Presto's guards a second later, the spoon is clean and it is touching his tie, with no guacamole whatsoever.

Places

The Chill Grill

The Chill Grill is a restaurant owned by Victor Baxter. It was introduced during the first season of That's So Raven. In the episode "If I Only Had a Job", Raven has a vision of her father opening his own restaurant called Baxter's Place. Later on during the second season it finally opened as The Chill Grill because in the episode "Campagin in the Neck", Eddie and Cory threw a baby diaper in the air and it hit the Baxter's Place sign, then it broke. The Chill Grill was introduced during the episode "Out Of Control". The restaurant is also a popular hangout for the kids that attend Raven's school. It was revealed in the episode "The Four Aces" that the Chill Grill was formally a swing 1930s restaurant by day and club by night called The Four Aces.

The Chill Grill almost went out of business when in the episode "The Grill Next Door", the restaurant faced stiff competition from a cheesy knock-off restaurant called The Hill Grill, which was owned by Victor's college cooking rival, Leonard Stevenson.

Bayside High School

Bayside High School is the school which Raven, Eddie and Chelsea attend. The school was previously featured in another "teen" show, Saved by the Bell. The school is, undoudtedly, the main place in which the show takes place (aside from Raven's house).

In the episode "Opportunity Shocks", Corey has a tablespoon of guacamole dip that he "accidentally" dumps on Presto Jones' jacket, only to test his grandmother's secret recipe for the disappearance of stains. When Cory is almost taken away by Presto's guards a second later, the spoon is clean and it is touching his tie, with no guacamole whatsoever.

Spoofs

That's So Raven has become a target for shows such as MADtv:

  • The parody of Snoop Dogg & Pharell's music video "Drop It Like It's Hot," entitled "Smokin' Too Much Pot," shows the That's So Raven logo on the screen and the lyrics include "and you're laughing at So Raven, from smokin' lots of pot, smokin' lots of pot, smokin' lots of pot..."
  • In another spoof, a white family has dinner at a restaurant. Then the grandfather says to the daughter, "Hey, want to go back to my place and watch a little That's So Raven on TV?"
  • In another spoof, a limo driver refuses to give his limo to two men visiting Hollywood, because he says "It's for a guest appearing on That's So Raven."
  • The show was spoofed in a promotional TV commercial for the 76th Academy Awards during Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and Alias in 2004. The commercial features Raven dressing up in luxurious and elegant clothing similar to the way actresses do when attending the ceremony and ends with Raven entering her living room watching the ceremony while eating popcorn.
  • On the show Dog Bites Man on Comedy Central, a character is watching That's So Raven on the television. Another character walks in and asks, "Are you watching That's So Raven? And he replies, "Yeah, it's the one with the picnic." They laugh and say, "That is so Raven!"
  • An episode of Drawn Together, depicts a post-apocalyptic future in which most of the world's people have become gay. The few remaining straight people are shown huddled together in a sewer watching That's So Raven on television. The line, "She used to be cute, now she's fat" can be heard being sung as part of the theme song to the show.

Merchandise

The That's So Raven franchise has been modeled after fellow Disney Channel hit Lizzie McGuire. Raven has a clothing line, DVD releases, novels, bedroom sets, a perfume, a GirlTalk board game [3], two video games [4] [5] and two soundtracks, That's So Raven: Songs from and inspired by the hit TV show and That's So Raven Too!.

In February 2005, That's So Raven toys were featured in the McDonald's Happy meal. In April 2005, a doll based on Raven Baxter was released [6] and another was released the following year.

In September 2005, the show also spawned a fragrance and an MP3 player. That same month, the clothing line was shipped to Macy's stores. As of 2006, the That's So Raven merchandise has made $400 million [7]. The show released its fourth DVD in July 2006, entitled Raven's Makeover Madness.

Video Games

The That's So Raven video game series includes three games:

Trivia

  • The pilot was shot in 2001, but aired on the US Disney Channel in January 2003.
  • In a lot of episodes, Cory was described as just starting junior high school, but he didn't start until the fourth season episode "Juicer Consequences".
  • The working title of That's So Raven was Absolutely Psychic.
  • The lead character's original name was "Dawn Baxter", but was changed to "Raven Baxter" when Raven-Symoné won the part. (Raven was originally cast as the best friend, but earned the leading role when Disney saw the pilot, according to Life Story Magazine.)
  • The beginning of the second season was filmed in Hollywood Center Studios.
  • The laugh tracks tend to be different in other sets such as an all age audience in home or school settings and children audience in child-like settings.
  • Raven appeared in the episodes "Checkin' Out" and "That's So Suite Life of Hannah Montana". Both serve as a triple crossover for The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, That's So Raven and Hannah Montana.
  • Raven-Symoné and Kyle Massey are the only cast members to appear in every episode of That's So Raven (as of 2006).
  • Orlando Brown doesn't appear in the episode "Juicer Consequences".
  • Symoné and Van der Pol displayed their singing abilities in the season one episode "A Fight at the Opera", parodying the play Carmen. Symoné, van der Pol and Orlando Brown had the chance to show off their singing and dancing abilities in extragavant musical sequences filmed for the episode "The Road to Audition".
  • This show is often considered an alternate version of Saved By The Bell, which co-creator Michael Poryes worked as a writer. Many episodes of Raven were based on previous Saved by the Bell storylines.
    • The high school that Raven, Eddie, and Chelsea go to is Bayside High School. This was also the name of the school featured in Saved By The Bell (That's So Raven co-creator Michael Poryes was the executive story editor for Saved by the Bell).
    • Ernie Sabella, who played Mr. Carosi on Saved by the Bell, has also guest starred on That's So Raven as Mr. Petracelli.
  • Anneliese van der Pol doesn't appear in the episodes Mother Dearest, Saturday Afternoon Fever and The Smell of Victory. It appears that the "Chelsea" character was invented much later on for the series (she did not appear in the pilot episode of the show).
  • In Test of Friendship, T'Keyah Crystal Keymah and Rondell Sheridan do not appear. However, they both are mentioned.
  • The episode The Parties seems similar to an episode in The Proud Family, when Penny and LaCienega (characters from the latter show) had a party on the same night.
  • Throughout each season, Raven has had different hair styles.
  • Raven-Symoné's dad, Christopher B. Pearman, has directed three episodes of That's So Raven entitled "Skunk'd", "The Royal Treatment" and "True Colors". He also directed the music video for the That's So Raven theme song. Raven-Symoné has produced most season four episodes.
  • Both Rondell Sheridan and T'Keyah Crystal Keymah have directed episodes of That's So Raven.
  • In the episodes "If I Only Had a Job" and "Party Animal", Raven gives two different addresses for her home: 419 and 519 Miranda Place, respectively.
  • In earlier seasons, Chelsea was fairly intelligent and had "ditzy moments"; however, in the later seasons, she became significantely "dumber" (for the purposes of comedy).
  • In the episode "Numb and Number", when Eddie and Victor are going over Chelsea's commercial, Eddie's character in the commercial tells Chelsea's character that he is her half brother Blaize, which happens to be the name of Raven-Symoné's brother.
  • Ally Parker (Alyson Stoner) and Madison (Rhyon Nicole Brown) both use the same backpack prop in "Goin' Hollywood" and "The Four Aces".
  • In 2005, the show was nominated for an Emmy Award for "Outstanding Children's Series". However, Nickelodeon (for Nick News) won the award.

Spinoffs

Cory in the House

Cory in the House is the first spinoff of That's So Raven. The show is expected to premiere in January, 2007.

The storyline involves Cory and his father Victor adjusting to life in Washington D.C.; Victor has received a job as the personal chef to the President. The show is also rumored to take place whilst Tanya is still at law school in England, with Raven (presumably) attending college with Eddie and Chelsea.

Movie?

There is much speculation on whether there will be a That's So Raven movie produced; at the end of an interview with Regis Philbin, Raven-Symoné answered his queries on a movie with the following: "You're hilarious, Regis - You're hilarious! You never know; whatever the fans want, I try to fulfill to 100%." It was also stated in an issue of Disney Adventures Magazine that a "That's So Raven movie is in the works".
