Karjat is a extended suburb of Mumbai Maharashtra, India with population of 1,82,482. . Agriculture,Tourism and Higher Education are the main occupation. Karjat comes under the residencial zone and is known for its clean air ,green environment and cosmopolitan mix. As Karjat is a part of Mumbai Metro Region (MMR), MMRDA has cleared Karjat for advanced Urban Planning with FSI of 1.0. It has engineering colleges, Pharmacy colleges and Mass Media Advertising Institutes (AICAR) affiliated to the AICTE & University of Mumbai and also a few other graduation colleges and Oxford Schools.
It is a major railway station terminus connected by local trains to Mumbai CST, Khopoli and Panvel. Located about halfway between Mumbai and Pune, the town is famous stop to buy batata vadas, a potato savoury, when travelling by train between the two cities. All the long distance trains halt here. Pune highway, national highways, Pune expressway and state highways are well connected. Its proximity to many industries and holiday spots with good connectivity has made it unique city in India. A new broad gauge railway has started between Karjat and Panvel and harbour railway line now stand extended upto Karjat. It is a preferred spot for weekend holidays river rafting tekking and hiking and is favored during rainy season.
Some of the must seen places include Peth Fort, Vaijanath (Famous Lord Shiva's Temple), Fort Kondavana (Near small village Kondivade) and the Dhak Fort. Many Farm Houses and Residencial colonies are situated here with all civil amenities and a municipal corporation.
Karjat is situated on the banks of river Ulhas. It is surrounded by hills from all directions. Rice plantation is also one of the major attraction of Karjat. Agriculture Research Center is also operational since many years.
Karjat has an advanced bio-tech institute which have been developing patented hybrid varities of Rice of international repute apart from other crops and technics.
