What is the source of your photo? Adam 22:48, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- It was contributed by a Flickr user. Having said that, I'm not sure about the copyright status - i.e. if it's his or copied from somewhere else - so I'll double-check that point. -- ChrisO 22:57, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Kosovo
Hey Chris, I think you might want to take a look at Kosovo once again. GeneralPatton 02:46, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)
At Demographic history of Kosovo you wrote regarding 1991 census estimates:
- The number of Albanians was widely regarded by independent observers as being a significant underestimate. At the time, most independent estimates put the Albanian population [...]
Who were that observers, who says that they are independent, and who says that they widely regard that? It is my understanding that observers only observe process of the census itself, while later analysis of the estimates could be conducted by, say, analysts? Also, who made that other estimates, who says that they are independent, and who counted them and says what most of them claim? Don't get me wrong, the estimates are considered imprecise, but you are portraiting them in a very bad light without any reference for such assertions.
I am writing here because you haven't worked on the article much in the past. However, if you intend to get involved, it would probably be better to reply at its talk page. Nikola 00:59, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)
You're Biased on Sollog
Do you think a real encyclopedia article should have a one way reporting of ones arrest record by a biased source. Your quoting of Altman verbatim makes this article and Wiki look like a joke. There are no major arrests in Sollog's record. If he did what Altman claimed 10 YEARS AGO he would have been arrested. Is Sollog famous for DUI that was over turned? Is Sollog famous for anything in his record? The AZ stuff is false, his secret service arrest was withdrawn, his DUI was over turned. So he has no convictions, yet you keep posting paragraphs about nonsense. You are biased and your actions will end up with a libel suit for Sollog against you and this site.
Open proxies
How do you identify an open proxy as such? All these vandals look alike to me. If there's a simple method for doing so I'll start blocking them permanently instead of temporarily as I've been doing. Gamaliel 00:18, 20 Dec 2004 (UTC)

FYROM/ROM
Hi Chris, what are you reasons for preferring to call it "Republic of Macedonia" rather than FYROM please? If we decide to name an article based upon a nations internally recognised term, then it follows that because the Greeks refer to Greek Macedonia as just "Macedonia" then there should be equal emphasis on this in the Macedonia article. I would suggest that this would make it very difficult to avoid POV wars. Therefore, I can see the only workable solution would be to name the articles based upon the majority international recognition - at least everyone will know which article to contribute to then. What do you think? --Rebroad 21:57, 22 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Vojvodina
Hi Chris! I've made some contributions to the Vojvodina article. There is a problem with one user who is pushing his own "truth" and who does not seem to be the least bit interested in consensus or even discussion. Can you give me, new myself, a bit of advice, or perhaps take a look yourself? Thanks! --Najroda 01:09, 28 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Wikipedia:WikiProject Discworld
Spam message: Having noticed you have made some great additions to the Discworld articles I thought you might be interested in this new WikiProject. It's at a very early stage and needs quite a bit of work. violet/riga (t) 21:42, 29 Dec 2004 (UTC)

macedonian-slavs in Greece
Since you declare so loudly the fact that you are neutral and since you believe that this unrelyable, unofficial organisation is in fact relyable to prove your self neutral and not hostile to Greece I expect that you also make changes in the demographics of Germany, since this website claims that 1/3 of the German population is a minority named Low-Germans(!!!) who demand more recognition (!!!!),in the demographics of France, since this website claims that in there exists a minority of 100.000 Savoyans(!!!????),a minority of 13.000.000 Occitans (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????????????????) who also demand recognition, not to mention what it claims about Italy,Spain,Danes,etc,etc....
So, my dear friend, protector of neutrality (sic), if you dont make these changes in the demographics of the above States according to this unrealyable organisation, which as you wrote exactly above
The site isn't an official EU one, but the estimate appears to be - it's from the EU's INTERREG II programme,
you will prove yourself being hostile, mean and having complex towards Greece...Kapnisma 16:06, 4 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Ja, ja, Kapnisma, it looks like everyone here has a complex against Greece. Or may be Greece has a complex towards itself? VMORO
Again about the Macedonian Slavs
ChrisO, please, be careful with the use of the term "Macedonian Slavs" as regards Pirin Macedonia. We have profuse and irrefutable evidence that the Slavic population of not only Pirin but also the the rest of Macedonia both considered itself and was considered Bulgarian until the Balkan wars and WWI. So if there was a change of self-consciousness and of perception in the outside world, it was from Bulgarian to Macedonian Slav, not the reverse. And whereas this change is valid for Yugoslav Macedonia, it is certainly not for Bulgarian Macedonia. If you want a list of books to get what I say confirmed, I can certainly give one - although the reference list in Macedonians is actually good enough.
Secondly, I don't know where you got this statement from: "Although some have suggested that Tito created the Macedonian Slav identity, it would perhaps be more accurate to say that he built on existing cultural distinctions to establish a sharper contrast between Macedonian Slavs and their neighbours in Serbia and Bulgaria." but may be you wanna explain what you mean by it. Travellers in the middle of the 19th century like Mckenzie and Lejean found the Slavs of Macedonia as Bulgarian as those in Moesia and Thrace. They have not mentioned even once names like "Macedonians" or "Macedonian Slavs". At the beginning of the 20th century, after 30 years of Serbian propaganda, there was some talk of cultural distinctions though again researchers such as Brailsford and Seton-Wats found the Macedonian Slavs to be Bulgarian and classified them as such. To get to the 1940s when there certainly was a cultural distinction. But if there was such, it was conditioned by political circumstances, not by innate cultural differences. And in that view, that statement must either be reworded or elaborated on but not thrown in like this. VMORO.
Another image to protect
Could you protect Image:2004 Indonesia Tsunami Complete.gif as well? It's getting a lot of petty vandalism. – flamuraiTM 22:42, Jan 7, 2005 (UTC)
- Done. -- ChrisO 22:44, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Hi ChrisO, thanks for restoring the Tsunami article. I deleted it by mistake when I tried to make a minor edit. I tried to restore it myself, but I got into an editing conflict with you. As you might have noticed, User:Ponder has now restored my first edit that you overlooked when you made the revert... --Paul 20:05, 9 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Pompeii
Hi Chris, just to let you know I've replaced the volcano image on various pages. We've been given full permission to use this from the copyright holders (Crew Creative, Ltd), including permission for others to use the image freely. The problem was that this information was on Commons (where the image was uploaded) and the current system doesn't effectively transfer the information to the local image page. This is a big problem in my eyes, the current link to Commons just isn't enough. Anyway, I've added the copyright tag and attribution directly to the local page, and will do the same for the other images we were given. Let me know if you have any questions about this, Regards -- sannse (talk) 10:38, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for sorting that out! -- ChrisO 11:02, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Question
I am getting a bit confused by all the licences and copyright rules. Can you tell me if I can put up a thumb of a page from the Times in a Wikipedia article (mentioning the source, date, year, etc.) or is this completely against the copyright rules? VMORO
Yes, I forgot, the article(s) I am talking about are from 1903. VMORO
- If it's from 1903, the copyright almost certainly expired a long time ago. I would suggest tagging it as public domain. -- ChrisO 18:12, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks for the answer:-) VMORO
Pompeii
We have written confirmation that we may use the Pompeii pictures. We are actually encouraged to use the Pompeii pictures. I have corresponded with teh company, which offered them, and they have clarified the issue with their lawyers. Jimbo is also fully aware of this, and all correspondence was cc'ed to him. Please put the picture you removed back. Danny 17:02, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)
I think Danny wrote this before seeing that the image is back. I think everything is clear now... we've added more info in the appropriate places - the Commons gallery talk page, the local pages. Let me know if there is anywhere else you think we need to make notes to ensure everyone is aware of the unique and exciting situation with these images. Thanks for your care in checking this out Chris -- sannse (talk) 17:15, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Pu`u `O`o volcanic cone
Hi Chris,
Just to let you know that following the promotion of your WP:FPC nominated image Image:Puu oo.jpg, it is now set to be Pic of the day on the 24th Jan. You may want to check the associated caption at Wikipedia:Picture of the day/January 24, 2005. I went with the volcanic cone description, because I just couldn't get my head round the Xenu article.... -- Solipsist 21:37, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- That's fine - Xenu is due to be featured in its own right as a featured article. -- ChrisO 22:11, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Image copyvio?
As for your changes to the Belisarius article, could you tell me how my image Image:Belisarius_by_Jean-François-Pierre_Peyron.jpg was a copyvio and your Image:Belisarius_by_Peyron.jpg is better? I would like to know what I did wrong so I would not repeat this mistake again. Tnx. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 13:36, 22 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Well, the fact that your image had "Copyright © 2000 National Gallery, London. All rights reserved" across the bottom was a bit of a clue... The National Gallery has already written to Jimbo Wales complaining about its copyrighted images appearing on Wikipedia, so it's best not to include anything from that source. -- ChrisO 14:29, 22 Jan 2005 (UTC)
WikiUser
Thanks for the heads-up. I've certified the basis for the dispute; I vaguely recall being quite pissed off at the time, though had by now forgotten the incident. Good luck & best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

Martello tower
Why? Dysprosia 14:14, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- Because I felt that the first image should actually show a Martello tower, not an indistinct structure hidden behind shrubbery. To be absolutely honest, if it wasn't for the caption I don't think one could tell that that was a Martello tower rather than some other circular stone structure. -- ChrisO 14:40, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)
They
According to Webster's New World Dictionary: Second College Edition (1970), one sense of "they" is "people (or a person) generally or indefinitely" (my emphasis). I always use it in place of the clunky "he/she" - or the fashionable and even more irritating "she" - when making a generic reference. Also, when I don't know the sex of a person (as with Wikiuser, or whoever it was) I use "they" (and forms for other cases, such as "them") to refer to them. Noel (talk) 15:00, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- I've always tried to steer clear of such formulations. English doesn't have a gender-neutral pronoun and "they" is supposed to be a plural pronoun. Given this, I just use "he" and hope not to be corrected. :-) -- ChrisO 22:19, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)
