Hellripper is a one-man black/speed metal band formed in 2014. All music is written and performed in studio by James McBain. Their cited musical influences include black metal bands such as Venom, and Darkthrone, thrash metal bands Megadeth, Metallica and Sabbat (JP), as well as a punk influence through bands like Motörhead and Anti-Cimex.[1][2] Lyrically, Hellripper focuses on witchcraft, Occult and Satanic themes, sometimes drawing from historical events such as the possession of Annelise Michel in the song Annelise, or The Affair of the Poisons in the song The Affair of the Poisons.

History

After a series of self-released recordings starting in 2015, Hellripper released their debut album Coagulating Darkness on Barbarian Wrath Records in 2017.[3] Hellripper's early singles had a strong punk influence which took a less prominent role beginning with with this album[4]. 2018 saw several releases alongside other artists including Barbatos, Nightrider, and Dulvel, along with an appearance on the Worldwide Organization of Metalheads Against Nazis II compilation[5]. The Black Arts and Alchemy EP was released in 2019 to critical praise[6][7][8]. Hellripper's second full length album, The Affair of the Poisons was released on October 9th, 2020 by Peaceville Records[9]. The album takes its title from a scandal involving witchcraft and poisoning which began in 1677 and led to the execution of 36 people with ties to King Louis XIV of France[10].

Live Performances

Hellripper began performing live shows in 2016, has done several European tours, and performed at music festivals such as Metaldays and Roadburn Festival[11][12]. When performing live, Hellripper performs with additional musicians[13].
