Hippie (also spelled "Hippy") is a slang term often used (sometimes proudly, sometimes pejoratively) to refer to members of various 1960s peace movements, or, more loosely, to anyone who dressed like them (a preference for long hair, beards, sandals, tie-dye, etc.). Often (and nearly always in its pejorative sense) it carries a connotation that the hippie participates in recreational drug use, at least to the extent of using marijuana, and does not think or care much about work, responsibility, personal hygeine and grooming.

The original Woodstock music festival was a famous gathering of hippies.
