John Hinckley shot President Ronald Reagan, Press Secretary James Brady, and two police officers on March 30, 1981. Reagan survived the attempt and Hinckley was arrested, but later acquitted by reason of insanity. He was apparently inspired to make the assassination attempt by an erotomanic obsession with actress Jodie Foster.
