The county has a total area of 517 km2 (200 mi2). 513 km2 (198 mi2) of it is land and 4 km2 (2 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.83% water.

As of 2000, there are 58,417 people, 21,519 households, and 15,773 families residing in the county. The population density is 114/km2 (295/mi2). The racial makeup of the county is 66.50% White, 31.05% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.67% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.65% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 1.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
