This is an old revision of this page, as edited by 194.81.33.39 (talk) at 19:56, 3 March 2007 (The Game "Planet of the Apes"). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Introduction

This is a fun and simple game. It's in the Sandbox — feel free to join in! It's a good place to practice making links to articles and find interesting pages to edit on Wikipedia.

How to play

Simply, the game involves adding a single word to the list that is related to the previous one. Edit "The Game" section, add a word, enclose it in brackets, and save the page.

By way of example, a game might start off with: cat. Then, the next person might add cat, dog. And after a few more rounds, we might get cat, dog, pet, animal, forest, tree, …

Avoid repeating words, and keep the links tasteful! Please use only blue links when associating. Piped links are acceptable in certain circumstances, such as when a word may have many ambiguities, like [[Queen (band)|Queen]]. Clearly, as the game develops, one gets a pretty long list! If you're stuck for ideas, link to the last word in the list and add the first link that appears on that page as the next link. Thus "Sebastian Junger" would be followed by "1962", and "Latin" by "ancient".

In spirit of the game, please only type one word consecutively. Then, another person can respond to your word, and the game continues!

Rules for Game #19

In Game #19, as to simplify the game, do not add branches to the game. Try to update the word count each time you add a word. The official limit for the main game is 1000 words. Please note that this word limit must not be raised.

This is Game #19. If you want to see Game #18, go here.

Archive of old games

Normal

(normal games are played out one word after another, with occasional splitting branches.)

Lasted until we had about 400 words on the list, and a bunch of repeated ones.
Our first attempt at word disassociation. Creativity was somewhat lower.
Our third word association game. Lasted until there were around 849 words on the list, including four "branches".
Our fourth word association game. Was limited to 400 words in the main branch, but several branches arose, including two invisible branches.
The fifth word association game.
The sixth word association game, with 400 words in the main branch and 5 other branches totaling another 510 words.
  • Game #7 ("Tram""Tom Bombadil")
The seventh word association game.
  • Game #8 ("NIMBY""Crystal Cave")
The eighth word assocation game, with branches "King", "AAA", "Dudley" and "Iowa".
The ninth word assocation game, with three normal branches and a branch of a branch.
  • Game #10 ("Pennsylvania""Alphabet soup")
The tenth word association game, with 400 words and four branches.
The eleventh word association game, with 400 words and four branches.
The twelfth word association game, with branches "The Sims", "Skyscraper", "Paddy wagon" and "K2"
  • Game #13 ("High Force""Pease Porridge Hot")
The thirteenth word association game, featuring the branches "Indian Reservation," "Bandit," "Hopscotch," and "I, Robot."
  • Game #14 ("Reflectance""Chewbacca Defense")
Game number 14 ended up having no fewer than ten branches, three of which were branches of other branches! The branches were: "Mirror," "Pansy," "The Final Solution," "Super Mario Kart," "Robinson Crusoe," "Big Ben," "Insect," "Guinness," "Vincent Van Gogh," and "Mustache."
With ten total branches (one twig and one branch of another branch), this game was a whole lotta fun!
Game number 16 and its crazy associations! Tons of branches too, as well as 2 branches of branches!
Game number 17 with quite a few branches, including one branch that branches out 3 times! In total there were 19 branches but for the first time ever, those branches were still open when the main game was closed.
Game number 18 consisted of well over 1000 words (not in the main game), containing a slew of smaller and smaller branches — the largest game yet. Interestingly enough, there were still a few red linked words (though nowhere near the number when the game first started).

A great deal of militaristic references

Radial Ultra Cross

(Radial ultra cross games begin in the center of a 7x15 table and expand outwards with predetermined letters forming a cross shape.)

  • Radial Ultra Cross #1 ("One""Word surfing champion", "Percussion", "War Pigs" and "Human evolution")
The first game of Radial Ultra Cross Association. The start letters were: "W O R D A S S O C I A T I O N" (vertical) and "C R O S S" (horizontal, centred on the 'O' of 'association')
The second game of Radial Ultra Cross Association. The start letters were "EMERALD", "RINGS" across and "PEARLANDDIAMOND" down.
The third game of Radial Ultra Cross Association. The start letters were "SOUTH" and "CHINA" across, and "DEUSEXMACHINA" down.
  • Radial Ultra Cross #4 ("North Sea""Isaac", "Killing In The Name", "Prawn Cocktail" and "Green curry")
The fourth game of Radial Ultra Cross Association. The start letters were "L SANGER" across, and "JIMMY DONAL WALES" down.
The start letters were "CIVITAS" across, and "QUEEN ELIZABETH 2" down.
The start letters were the letters of the alphabet from A to U radiating out clockwise from the centre. Additionally V, W, Y and X were start letters for the corner cells.
  • Radial Ultra Cross #7 ("Trinity, Jersey""Cruise ship", "Christianity", "Sogn og Fjordane" and "Quadruped")
The start letters were "ELIZABETH CASTLE" down and "FORTIFY" across. Quite a European game with emphasis on Belgium and Scandinavia!
The start letters were "BRITISH RAILWAYS" down and "AMTRACK" across. Turned into quite a religious game if you count caravanning and comic books as religion...
  • Radial Ultra Cross #9 ("Actress""Monty Python and the Holy Grail", "La Bocca della Verità", "Desiccation" and "Independence")
The start letters were "MIRIAM MARGOLYES" down and "BELARUS" across because of Ms Margolyes' Belarusian haritage.

Reverse Radial Ultra

Radial Ultra association in reverse - start at the corners and work to the middle.
The second game of working towards the centre from the corners
  • Reverse Radial Ultra #3 ("Varduli", "Andover, South Dakota", "Yi Yi: A One and a Two" and "Claus Spahn""The United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarve")
The third game that became strangely syncronised towards the centre
War and heavy metal
Quite a lot of food in this one!
  • Reverse Radial Ultra #7 ("Highways Act 1980", "Carluke", "Architecture in London" and "Greg Graffin""Stephen King bibliography")
Fantasy novelists, Beatles songs and various cities all have this in common
  • Reverse Radial Ultra #8 ("Only Fools and Horses", "Tactical Divers Group", "Bundesverdienstkreuz" and "Meremere""Violence")
Along with British and American culture and swimming, violence was prevalent in this game.
Queens, consorts and dogs with a little bit of baseball.
Languages and war were the major themes of this game, with felines, spiders and north-west England also making an appearance.
Language and entertainment (television and music both) were common themes.

Psychadelic

(Psychadelic games feature unusual ultra ideas. Games are started by Xhin, Thryduulf, and Francs2000. )

The first game of Psychadelic Word Association; featured ten words in random places.
Featured four unknown words that had to be guessed at.
In possibly the best effort of word associationists, you had to play the game like psychadelic #1, except all of the first letters are fixed, some of them t, e, a, e, or s. There were only three letters remaining at the end. Well done.
In this edition, you had to Expand out the entire table from one word, reaching all four corners of an 8x8 grid.
In this flavor, you had to-- Well, why don't you read the instructions for yourself?
Your run of the mill radial word association, with one exception...
A remake of game #1, this time the words were the names of islands and the word "island" was prohibited.
A development on the 10 islands idea, except the starting words were placed in a diamond pattern around the board.
Another 10 islands game, this time the words were all related to 10, so "10" and "Ten" were prohibited.
Ultra association, but words must associate to all adjacent ones and one from a list - which one depends on how many letters were in the previously added word!
An Ultra Game, but if it's in a colored cell, it must also associate with the other word in that color.

Sliding Doors

(Sliding Doors associations are two parallel games of ultra association with the same start word)

Based on the film Sliding Doors, this was two games of ultra fixed in one. This game inspired the other Sliding Doors associations.
Two games of ultra association in one
One game featured the Soviet Union heavily, while Star Trek and insects featured in the other.
One game was quite eclectic with astrology, deities, queens and sweets. London and Manchester predominated in the other.

Ultra Fixed Disassociation

(Another 7x15 grid game. The beginning words are not associated with previous games. Played like Word Disassociation)

Like the Ultra Fixed association games, but the words don't associate with each other.
Same as last time but with different disassociations.
Same as last two times but with different disassociations.
Same as last two times but with different disassociations.

Misc

(An archive of different game concepts that haven't had four in a series yet.)

  • Enigmatic #1 (Scratching post, Garfield:The movie, pink panther, Dowsing rod, the internet movie database.)
The first game of Enigmatic. Was like a condensed version of psychadelic #2.
  • Enigmatic #2 (Tuxedo, Channel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Tutles, Dominoes, Microwave)
Like the first Enigmatic game, although this took a little longer.
Like the normal assocation games, but with words not associated with the previous one.
Like word association, but without associating the words!
Associate with a spiral of disassociated words.
Each player adds one word, and selects location of next move, and whether to associate or disassociate.
WA with a purpose?!
Word association with a goal?!
