Need for Speed XI (NFS XI [1]) (unofficial title) is expected to be the latest installment of Electronic Arts' popular racing game series Need for Speed. It is currently in an early stage of development, and is expected to be officially announced sometime this spring.[2]

Information

Little is known about Need for Speed XI, but according to sources it will include much of the things missing from Need for Speed: Carbon, such as drag racing, which was absent in NFS: Carbon. It is also said that it will feature very advanced graphics suitable for the next-gen consoles, especially taking advantage of the powerful PlayStation 3. The game engine will be built from scratch as opposed to refining an older engine, like they did with NFS: Most Wanted's engine to NFS: Carbon, and built to fit the standards of today's fast systems. NFS XI will also transition from the arcade-like racing of previous titles in the NFS series towards more realistic racing, such as the GT-series, making a hybrid of the two. Autosculpt from NFS: Carbon will be back and improved.[2][3]

More information is hopefully due this spring at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2007, which takes place in May this year in Los Angeles, California, and later on the Games Convention 2007, which takes place in August this year in Leipzig, Germany.

Title

According to the Russian publisher of the game, Soft Club, the game will have the title Need for Speed: Pro Street and is planned for release in November 2007.[4][3] This information soon also appeared in several other channels, however, the information was removed from Soft Club's site soon after publishing. EA have officially not yet confirmed the title, or denied it. According to Czech fansite NFSGame.net, an EA employee has said: "This title for new NFS is very improbable - in my opinion - that's bullshit."[5] Technically, this is not a denial, just a person's own opinion. However, according to fansite NFS-Planet these rumours are denied by EA - the title of the next NFS game is still a secret.[6] Any official announcement is expected to be at E3 2007, or later at the Games Convention 2007.

Development

According to the Czech website NFSGame.net, they have received a message from EA stating that the game is currently in Alpha stage, as of 15 March, and that it almost surely should be presented this summer at E3 2007 in Los Angeles. The message also explains that they couldn't reveal as much about the game in January as they were supposed to do, and any screenshots published before the game is shown to the public are very likely to be fake.[7]

Possible cars

EA may be in the making of sound effects for some of the cars in NFS XI. According to a forum thread on Supraforum, EA is currently searching for modded cars for a two-day recording in South California. The cars they are looking for, and if it's correct very likely will appear in NFS XI, are:[8]

New "NFS-girl"

The process of selecting the next "NFS-girl" is underway. Currently, there is a contest going on the site FHM.com in co-operation with EA, where one can vote at ten contestants to determine who to be the next "NFS-girl". The contestants are:[9]

  • Sapphira O'Shannon
  • Georgina Barlett
  • Amy Molloy
  • Sandra Ontiveros
  • Laura Southgate
  • Bella Lane
  • Ashleigh McKenzie
  • Sarah Mathers
  • Shannan
  • Emma Thomas

As of December 30, 2006, five girls have been eliminated, according to an unofficial statement.[2] Although, it appears to still be possible to vote on those. Voting is still open for the remaining five. More information about the contest and voting can be found at the site.
