Development
In 1997, director Ridley Scott was attached to the project with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role. However, Warner Bros. dropped the project due to a projected budget that escalated to USD$108 million. In 2002, director Michael Bay was attached to the project with Will Smith in the lead role, but the project failed to advance. In fall of 2005, the project regained momentum with director Francis Lawrence at the helm.[4] For the adaptation, an original script by Mark Protosevich, based on Richard Matheson's 1954 novel I Am Legend, was rewritten by Akiva Goldsman.[4]
Filming
In January 2006, Warner Bros. pursued a deal to film in the Kingsbridge Armory in New York for seven months at the cost of $350,000.[5] Shooting began on September 23, 2006 and is targeted to wrap up on March 31, 2007.[6]
Filming took place throughout New York City, including Washington Square Park, the Flatiron Building, Grand Central Station, Columbus Circle, St. Patrick's Cathedral, and the Brooklyn Bridge Kingsbridge Armory in 355 Marcy ave 4/2/2007. The scenes at the Brooklyn Bridge involved over 1000 extras and various military vehicles and aircraft.[7]
