Philippines’ Next Top Model (retroactively as PNTM) is based on the popular, top-rating series America's Next Top Model, produced by Tyra Banks, Ken Mok of Making the Band and Anthony Dominic of Amazing Race. America’s Next Top Model is now on its 8th cycle in the US with Cycle 6 currently being aired on ETC and Cycle 7 on Channel V in the Philippines. To date, America’s Next Top Model has been franchised to many countries with the Philippine edition to be produced by Solar Entertainment Corporation. The international destination for this cycle is Victoria City, Hong Kong.

The show had its premiere last March 13, 2007 on Radio Philippines Network.

About the show

Philippines' Next Top Model follows the transformation of young women into potentially fierce supermodels as they vie for a coveted modeling contract. All this under 24-hour surveillance that chronicles their every move. Trained by Ruffa Gutierrez-Bektas herself, the contestants are judged on a weekly basis by an elite panel of fashion industry professionals including Preview Magazine's Editor-in-Chief Pauline Suaco-Juan, runway expert Robbie Carmona and photographer Xander Angeles. Each week one contestant is eliminated based on her performance on the challenges presented on the show. Aside from weekly evaluations, the intensive training prepares the aspiring young models for the high-stress modeling world by teaching them to master fashion photo shoots and the ultimate runway catwalk.

The winner will bring home fabulous prizes: a modeling representation with Starz People(Modeling/Talent Agency) in Hong Kong, an editorial fashion spread in Preview magazine, 500,000 PHP($10,000) in cash courtesy of Mane and Tail Shampoo, 150,000PHP modeling contract with Saga Events, endorsement from L’Oreal Paris for their local campaigns for one year, complimentary treatments from Marie France and Facial Care Center for one year, and a south sea pearl necklace from Jewelmer plus the title "Jewelmer’s Pearl Ambassador to the World."

Watch out, the Philippines is next.. was PNTM's promotional theme during its advertising campaign and audition tour.

Format

The first Philippines' Next Top Model has selected fourteen contestants and may run to at least fourteen episodes or less, with the creation of twist and probable double-elimination. As what have ANTM premises, there is one contestant eliminated per episode (though there have been cases of a double elimination or no elimination) by consensus of the judging panel.

The Girls Get Waxes

Original Airdate: March 13, 2007

PNTM started off by auditioning in Davao held by model Wilma Doesnt, in Cebu held by fashion director Robby Carmona and in Manila held by Wilma Doesn't, Robby Carmona and top model Rissa Mananquil. 3,300 contestants tried out.

The 27 girls who are the semi-finals flown into Hotel Intercontinental, Makati. The girls takes their first challenge, as they meet Ruffa Guttierez for the first time. While on the final screening they faced the judges in panel of Robbie Carmona, Wilma Dosent, and Ruffa Guttierez who test them in a runway challenge and questioned on why they should be the Philippines' Next top Model. Finally the contestants for this season was narrowed down to 14 girls by the judges, and moved to their fashioned models pad. The girls have given the chance to choose their own room and bed for the entire long run, unfortunately Elf and Jen failed to get one for themselves because there are only 12 bed in the house but it doesn't mean they're eliminated at that moment it was just a fair challenge to them.

The next day the girls got to meet a special visitor to give them a Brazillian wax, but most of the girls felt it was too painful. Then they had their first photo shoot, a bikini shoot at Avenida, Rizal Avenue - Manila. The photoshoot was conducted with the help of Xander Angeles, a renowned photographer in the Philippines, the girls were also mentored by the help of Joey Mead. At the panel, the judges felt that both Sarah Kae and Marge both failed to give and exert an effort during the photoshoot.

The judges criticized Kae for not having a personality in her photo, while Marj has been noted for her performance that is poorly done and she lacks of personality, reasons why both of them have been eliminated in the competition.

  • Bottom two: Marge Cornillez & Sarah Kae Custodio
  • Eliminated: Marge Cornillez & Sarah Kae Custodio (Double Elimination)
  • Featured photographer: Xander Angeles

The Girl Who Strikes in Her Attitude

Original Airdate: March 20, 2007

The girls get their first Runaway lesson by Wilma Doesnt and Robby Carmona. They taught them how to walk with attitude. Then they gave the girls animal roles to act out while walking on the runaway. Their first challenge was to walk through mud. Sheena wins and picks Raine, Weng and Gemma to share the prize. The prize was dinner with top models Joey Mead and Rissa Mananquil. The next day the girls go to Celine where they each could get a bag for free. Later on the day, the girls get a Ruffa-text about their next photo shoot.

The girls arrive at the shoot and was told it was a high-fashion shoot only wearing lingerie. The girls are separated into 3 groups (good, average, bad) based on the previous shoot. The group that did the best last week gets the simplest set and the group that did horrible on the previous photoshoot gets the busy set.

The remaining 12 girls were deliberated in their lingerie shoot, Sheena took the center stage with her High Fashioned photo while Bambi and Raine got their fierce attitude and see their improvement. The judges felt Mira had emotional baggage due to her grandma having a surgery during screening day and lack of passion for the competition. They felt Weng had an attitude problem, complaining some fits about being comfortable in the photoshoot, Vince took a knot in her about "there's no such thing as being comfortable in a photoshoot".

The Girl Who Is Confused

Original Airdate: March 27, 2007

The girls get their makeovers. Soon they learned how to put on make-up (the difference between day and night make-up) from the L'oreal Paris make-up team. They soon went on a challenge----- to do their own make-up inside a moving car for ten minutes. Bambi won the challenge and picked Jen and Elf to share her prize-----a dinner in a restaurant and special gifts courtesy of L'oreal. They soon did a photoshoot with reptiles. Bambi gets scratched by an iguana but does well. At panel, they were once again challenged to do their make-up, this time as rockstars. Joy was praised for her stunning photo and her confidence, while Elf, Grendel and Jen were praised for their improvements. Joy's name was called first. Subsequently, it was Mira and Jayna in the bottom two. Mira did not improve enough and looks confused in the photo and in panel, while Jayna dressed badly and did not look like a model in person. Ultimately, it was Mira who went home, and Jayna gets another chance because she took stunning pictures.

  • Bottom two: Jayna Reyes and Mira Baino
  • Eliminated: Mira Baino

In Focus

The show has been criticized early on by the controversial selection of its host Ruffa Guttierez-Bektas, known more as an actress and beauty queen. Initial episodes of the series have brought credible challenges but has been reviewed for bad production design, poor editing and weak input from the host and fellow-judges.
