MTVX was a Viacom-owned American rock music video channel. Like its sister stations, VH1 Classic, VH1 Soul, VH1 Country, MTV Hits, and VH1 Mega Hits, MTVX was available exclusively on digital cable packages or satellite TV providers.
Format
MTVX had no commercials and would show rock music videos constantly. The channel aired contemporary videos and older videos that were no longer shown on MTV. Likewise, MTVX was not limited to just one genre of rock music videos. The channel aired a variety of genres, including punk, metal, and grunge.
Cancellation
MTVX was replaced on May 1, 2002 by MTV Jams, a hip-hop music video channel. The replacement of MTVX with MTV Jams was decried by rock music fans.[1] MTV's explanation, based upon ratings and Billboard chart information, was that more of the American population would prefer to see hip-hop and R&B music videos, rather than the alternative and hard rock videos that MTVX had been created to play.[2]
