Glenlyon Norfolk School (GNS) is an independent, co-ed, university preparatory school in Victoria, British Columbia. It was formed in 1986 with the amalgamation of Glenlyon School and Norfolk House. The school offers instruction from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12, and teaches according to the traditional BC curriculum. The school also offers the prestigious International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program, Middle Years program, and, at the high school level, offers the IB Diploma Program as an option. This is in breaking from other private schools such as Upper Canada College, where enrollment in the IB Diploma Program is mandatory.

GNS's nearly 700 student occupy two campuses in Victoria: the picturesque Beach Drive campus, located on Willows Beach, is home to Junior Kindergarten through Grade Five. The campus is focused around the former home of Sir Francis Rattenbury, though most classes are held in other buildings than the original house. Until 2003, the Beach Drive Campus was known as the Junior Boys Campus, reserved for boys from Kindergarten to Grade Seven. In 2003 the school restructured its approach to co-ed learning, and the Beach Drive Campus saw female students for the first time. Although the campus is now shared, boys and girls remain in separate classrooms for lessons.

The Pemberton Woods campus, home to students Grades 6-12, combines the old Norfolk House campus with a number of new buildings built after the amalgamation. Before the restructuring the Pemberton Woods Campus was divided into the Junior Girls and Senior Campus: today, although officially one campus, students in Grades 6-8 generally attend classes in the old Junior Girls buildings, while Grades 9-12 use the newer buildings. Students in Grade Six remain in single-sex classrooms. In Grade Seven classes become co-ed, while in the Senior School all classes are co-ed.

Each Campus has its own Principal, while the entire school is administered by the Headmaster.

GNS is a member of the International Baccalaureate Organization, The Round Square, the CAIS, the ISABC, and the NAIS.

The Present Headmaster is Mr Simon Bruce-Lockhart, often considered a kindly and wise man, ewith undoubtedly effective public speaking skills. Mr. Bruce-Lockhart has been on more than one occasion compared in personality to Albus Dumbledore, the fictional Headmaster of Hogwarts, in the novels and films of the Harry Potter series.

Others notable for considered to be immensely smart, well-spoken and interesting include the legendary Larry the janitor, whose wise words inspire us all, and Mr. Baty, the man of steel who always has an unusual yet true story to tell. Coincidentally, he is also the school's debate coach, hence the nickname "Mr. deBaty". Other nicknames include "Mount Batums/Mount Baty", "Batums Island", "Batemaster", "B-Unit", or simply the affectionate "Batums".

The iPod Thefts of April 2007

As of April 2nd, there have been disproportionate amount of thefts of valuables, the majority of them taking place in the locker rooms of the upper Gudewill Building, at the Pemberton Woods campus. In particular, iPods went missing in great numbers. A week into the beginning of what is now known as the iPod Thefts or the Dark Ages, an impromptu emergency talk was held in the Gudewill Gym. Present was all students at the Pemberton Woods campus (grades 6-12). All PW teachers were there, as well as a policeman, who, when mentioning a reward of $3000 or more dollars, got a lot of attention. At it's all-time high peak, 5 iPods went missing on one day. When Mr. Bruce-Lockhart spoke, he mentioned some 9 iPods having gone missing. As of recently, the thefts have slowed down, partially due to the administration's awareness of a thief, partially due to student's caution in leaving valuables around, and most likely due to the fact that the two locker rooms are now padlocked, preventing further crime. It was at one time rumoured that security cameras would be palced outside each locker room to monitor who enters it. It was estimated that almost 40% of senior school students who had left an iPod in the locker room after or during April 2nd had it stolen. None have returned, although students are now getting on with their lives, and recovering from the incredible losses.

Theories

Some question an "accidental" fire alarm being pulled by a later identified Middle School student on April 2nd. Its seems to many that, seeing as the first thefts started exactly during the fire alarm being pulled (throughout this, all students and teachers at PW Campus were on the back field, as done for all fire drills or fires) the fire alarm may have been an intentional diversion. Others are convinced that it was merely a late April Fool's Day joke gone too far. Others still say that this was merely coincidence, totally an accident on the part of the Middle Schooler, who was in no way related to the thefts that ensued that afternoon. Although the school (for obvious reasons) does not pronounce or spread these ocurrences, the truth must be told.

Debate

GNS has an outstanding Debate Team, two members of which (Ethan Lustig and Colleen McCutcheon) are currently at the Junior Natonal Debate Championships in Montreal, Quebec. GNS is the only school to send debaters from Vancouver Island in 2007. In addition, this is the first time in years that GNS has had two debaters make it into the nationals.
