Peugeot 605
The Peugeot 605, based on the Citroen XM hatchback/estate chassis (although using a totally different saloon bodystyle), was successor to the 505. It went on sale in 1989 and remained in production for ten years.
Power range from a 2.0 petrol engine to a 2.1 turbo-diesel unit, with a 3.0 V6 capable of 146mph topping the range.
High equipment levels, a luxurious interior, smooth ride and excellent handling were strong points for the 605. But Peugeot and Citroën have always struggled to succeed with large cars outside their home market of France, and the 605 was no different. At the outset it was too similar to the smaller 405 to prove popular with a wide range of customers, and after the launch of the excellent 406 in 1995 it was a wonder that Peugeot sold any at all. The 605 was quietly dropped in 1999 and its successor, the 607, went into production a short time afterwards.
