The University of Barcelona (Catalan Universitat de Barcelona) is a university located in the city of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.

History

It was founded in 1450, by king Martin I of Aragon, forced to move to Cervera in the 18th century for some 150 years, and relocated to Barcelona again in the 19th century.

The reason of this move was to reward the people of Cervera having supported Felip d'Anjou on the War_of_Spanish_Succession, whose citizens asked port rights for the city. Philip_V_of_Spain denied them, but in exchange moved to Cervera the University of Barcelona a Cervera.

It was the only University in Catalunya and the Balearic Islands until the segregation process, started on 1968, ended on the 90's, and resulting in the creation of other Catalan universities and the University of the Balearic Islands. On this date, also started an expansion that toke it to enlarge the University (until then only in the reduced building of the University square) with the new campus of Pedralbes, Sants, Bellvitge and Mundet.
