"Tell Me Where It Hurts" is the 2007 single from alternative rock band Garbage, and is scheduled for release worldwide by A&E Records (excluding North America) [1] preceding the band's career-spanning retrospective album Absolute Garbage. There has been no confirmation of a North American single release. [1]

"Tell Me Where It Hurts" was written by Garbage following the end of the band's temporary hiatus. At a benefit show organised by drummer Butch Vig[2], Vig told Billboard, "Despite the layoff, the group has been sharing song ideas via the Internet. We need to sit down in a room and play them and get them complete". [3] "Tell Me Where It Hurts" came from sessions the group held in Spring 2007. [4]

Single release

On May 19, 2007, Garbage fan sites reported that the music video for the song, directed by Sophie Muller [5], was being aired on UK digital television provider Virgin Media's Video on Demand service. [6] The video for "Tell Me Where It Hurts" was filmed in late April in Los Angeles; [7] and featured a cameo from members of Wisconsin band Wandering Sons. [7] Fans have commented that the video's Sixties style, ultra-modern French inspired set and imagery recall Luis Buñuel's 1967 movie Belle de jour. On May 29, the video officially debuted on Channel 4's Video Exclusive slot. [8]

On May 22, "Tell Me Where It Hurts" was confirmed by Garbage for UK release on July 7 preceding Absolute Garbage on CD single and on two 7" formats. [1] On June 11 it was confirmed that the release date had been pushed back a week to July 16. [9] There is a rumoured digital-only Australian release; [10] the week ending June 24 "Tell Me Where It Hurts" is the 2nd Most Added song at Australian radio. [11] Although there is no confirmed North American release for "Tell Me Where It Hurts" as yet, and no radio impact date known, alternative rock station WEQX has been playing the song from May 28. [12] Promotional singles were issued to radio across Europe that same week; Guerilla Radio in Romania becoming one of the first to air the song. [12] On June 16, "Tell Me Where It Hurts" was C Listed on UK BBC Radio 2. [13]

On May 31 Garbage's MySpace profile was updated to include "Tell Me Where It Hurts" and B-side "Bad Boyfriend (Garbage remix)" on streaming audio. [14]
