Athletics

Sports offered include football, soccer, baseball, softball, golf, wrestling, basketball, volleyball, swimming, flag football, and track and field, along with club teams for ice hockey, lacrosse, and bowling. Boys' sports teams are called the Bloomingdale Bulls, and girls' sports teams are called the Bloomingdale Lady Bulls. Led by Coach Dave Tennian, the boys' soccer team was voted The Tampa Tribune's Team of the Decade for the '90's, winning state championships in '93, '95, and '98. They were ranked in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/USA Today Top Ten poll in '93, '95, '98 and '99. During the regular season of 2004, they were ranked No. 1 before losing despite a 1-0 lead for the first 60 minutes scored by David McClelland in the state semi-final to eventual champion, Miami Sunset. Emily Janss, who played for the women's soccer team went on to star with the New York Power of the WUSA, starred for the Lady Bulls in the 90's. The women's team won a state title in 2001. The football team has had less success, winning half their games only once in their 18 year history. Chad Bratzke is the only B'Dale football player to play in the NFL, primarily with the Indianapolis Colts.

Accomplishments and Accolades

Bloomingdale High School's music program is consistently among the top programs in the district and state. They travel annually to competitions throughout the southeastern United States. Last year, the music program went to Orlando, Florida. The Band, Orchestra, and Chorus all came out on top as Grand Champions. The Rajun' Bull Marching Band is the largest in the county, with over 250 members. This year's halftime show is two songs from the band The Red Hot Chili Peppers higher ground and under the bridge. The band director is Jon Sever, who before 2002 was a graduate teaching assistant with the Florida State University Marching Chiefs. The Rajun' Bull Marching Band has earned the highest ranking, a Superior, since the school's opening in 1988.[citation needed]

Bloomingdale's science program regularly receives awards from various state and local agencies. Biology students have planted hundreds of thousands of student-grown plants in Tampa Bay.

On May 4 the Bloomingdale AFJROTC departed for Daytona Beach, Florida for the National High School championships. They performed on May 5 at the Daytona Beach Ocean Center. The Armed Exhibition Team placed 24th and the Armed Color Guard Team placed 9th out of 40 schools. The members of the team are Savannah Gibbs, Johnathan Jolly, James Thomas, and Sam Vona. They were the highest placing team for Bloomingdale at this event. The Rajun' Bull Drill Teams have been practicing for months for this competition and have done extremely well.
