Franklin Pierce was the 14th (1853-1857) president of the United States. Native of New Hampshire. An advocate of compromise between slave and free states, Pierce is associated with the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act which led to the Bloody Kansas struggles. Outside of politics, Pierce was a friend of literary figure Nathaniel Hawthorne.
