Template:Future sport The Asian Football Confederation's 2011 AFC Asian Cup finals will be held in Qatar in January 2011.[1][2]. It will be the fifteenth time the tournament has been held, and the second time it has been hosted by Qatar, the other being the 1988 AFC Asian Cup.

Host selection

Countries that lodged interest were Qatar, India and Iran. [3] [4] Qatar officially submitted a bid on June 19, 2007. [5]

India however withdrew their interest in hosting the event, currently leaving Qatar as the only country to have officially launched a bid after Iran's failure to submit proper documentation for their bid on time. [6]

Australia was also considering a late bid[7]

The host nation was announced on July 29 2007, during the 2007 AFC Asian Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia. Due to FIFA regulations stating that confederation events can be hosted either in January or July, and the July being peak summer heat in the Middle East, it was also announced that the tournament will be held in January of that year.[1][2]

The AFC announced that the host of the Asian Games will be a rotated to East Asia for the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.[8]

Qualification

Main article: 2011 AFC Asian Cup qualification

The teams which finish first, second and third in the 2007 AFC Asian Cup, and the host nation for the 2011 competition, shall receive automatic byes to Finals. The AFC Challenge Cup shall act as the qualification competition for the 17 eligible countries within the emerging and developing category of member associations. The winners of the AFC Challenge Cup competitions in 2008 and 2010 shall qualify automatically to the 2011 AFC Asian Cup Finals. Should the champions of 2008 and 2010 be the same team, then the runners-up from AFC Challenge Cup 2010 shall qualify along with the champion. [9]

  •  Iraq: Winner in 2007 AFC Asian Cup
  •  Saudi Arabia: Runner-up in 2007 AFC Asian Cup
  •  South Korea: Third place in 2007 AFC Asian Cup
