Wikipedia:Bot requests
This is a page for requesting work to be done by a bot. This is an appropriate place to simply put ideas for bots. If you need a piece of software written for a specific article you may get a faster response time at the computer help desk. You might also check Wikipedia:Bots to see if the bot you are looking for already exists. There are also quite a few "frequently denied requests", for various reasons, such as a welcoming bot, as it would de-humanize the process, and an anti-vandalism bot, as several already exist. If you want to request a bot to populate a category for a wikiproject, please create a subpage with a full list of categories to be used, as most bot operators who can complete this task will not go into all subcategories, as some members may be irrelevant to your project. Also note that if you are requesting that an operator change or add a function to an existing bot, you should ask on his talkpage, if you have questions about certain bots, they should be directed to the bot owner's talk page to the Bot Owners' Noticeboard, and that if a bot is acting improperly, it should be posted to the owner's talk page, the Administrators' Noticeboard, or AIV, listed in increasing levels of severity, and a link to the discussion may be posted at the Bot Owners' Noticeboard if appropriate. Please add your bot requests to the bottom of this page.
If you are a bot operator and you complete a request, note what you did, and archive it. Requests that are no longer relevant should also be archived in a timely fashion.
- See also: Current policy on bots and Wikipedia:Bots/Frequently denied bots, to make sure your idea is not listed.
![]() | Please do not feel slighted if there is no reply to your bot request for some time. Bot operators, like all Wikipedia contributors, are volunteers, and indeed there is a shortage of editors with the technical skills required to operate bots and write code to your specifications. If you feel that a task is time-critical and that waiting for a bot operator to reply or for a BRFA to be approved may take too long, you may want to consider a user-friendly, semi-automated tool like AWB. |
Bot to categorise good articles (via the topic= parameter)
A task force was recently set up to categorise GAs (using the topic= parameter in GA). It was then proposed that a bot do the job, by checking which section of WP:GA the article is listed in, and changing the parameter on the article's talk page accordingly.
If someone thinks they can do this, and would like to do this, please respond on the talk page, here, and we can give you the details and sort things out. Thanks in advance, Giggy UCP 06:48, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

"Due to the fact that" => "Because"
I would love it if a bot could replace the former hackneyed expression with the latter, simpler one. Building my own bot might be an interesting project, but I'm not sure it's worth the effort. Surely we have an existing style-bot that can have this added to its repertoire? Please advise. Josephgrossberg 14:46, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
- How would you ensure that no quoted text was changed? Andy Mabbett | Talk to Andy Mabbett 20:02, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
- I object to this idea. Sometimes saying "due to the fact that" avoids repitition if "because" has been used previously. It's a matter of preference-- there's no pressing reason why this would need to be done. --Android Mouse 21:17, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry, I'm afraid I have to object to this as well. I don't feel its an appropriate bot task (and, as a matter of fact, I wouldn't really be comfortable with just RegExTypofixing this either) and, as hackneyed as it may be, 'due to the fact' is still proper English. The 'comprises of' thing we've been debating since, well, what feels like the beginning of time is one thing but, personally, I feel that this is really pushing it. -- S up? 21:46, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
Properly done, a bot could do this task (ignoring anything in quotes or the cquote/blockquote templates/htmltags, but its simply not a suitable task for a bot. The bot would not know the stylistic concerns. I just don't think this is a good task. —— Eagle101Need help? 15:47, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
Interwiki coordinates
Could somebody get an interwiki bot running that'll copy coor (and preferablity convert to coord) from other wikis to prevent duplication of work. —Dispenser 00:59, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
- Not if there could be any problem with licensing; furthermore, you'd have to specify which wiki. The bot can't just look all over the Internet. — Madman bum and angel (talk – desk) 14:04, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
- I think he meant other languages. —METS501 (talk) 14:45, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
- Ah, from other Wikipedia wikis. (I should have figured from "interwiki" ;)) Perhaps; I'll have to see how they do it. — Madman bum and angel (talk – desk) 15:01, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

- Doesn't User:The Anomebot2 already do that? Andy Mabbett | Talk to Andy Mabbett 14:21, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- It did it as a one time operation. I suggesting that mechanism that keeps interwiki links concurrent also keep the coordinates concurrent. I suppose I'll have better luck posting to the pywikipedia what-ever-they-have-list. —Dispenser 00:47, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
Convert dates for album, single and film release dates
The templates Infobox Album, Infobox Single and Infobox Film now have hCalendar mark-up. A bot is needed, to convert the release dates from normal wiki-linked dates to Start date (which outputs an ISO8601 format date, wrapped in class="dtstart"
, hidden by CSS but designed to degrade gracefully) on each occurrence; but only if the full date is provided, not there is only a year or year and month pair. If more than one date exists, only the first (earliest) should be converted. Date/ month order should be preserved, by use of the "df" flag, in the date template. Examples of the date template in use are at The Dark Side of the Moon, I Want to Hold Your Hand and The Piano respectively. Thank you. Andy Mabbett | Talk to Andy Mabbett 15:54, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
- Can you give us a sample of an edit that would need to be made? I'm a bit confused trying to follow what you're saying. Thanks. —METS501 (talk) 19:56, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

List of tallest structures in the United States - coordinates
I have just split List of tallest structures in the United States, moving a second, duplicate (but differently-ordered) list to List of tallest structures in the United States by height. Please can someone automate the copying of coordinates from the former to a new column on the latter page? At the same time, please add hCard microformat mark-up, such that:
(wrapped for clarity)
|- | 628.8 m || KVLY-TV mast || Blanchard, North Dakota || Guyed Mast ||
becomes:
|- class="vcard" | class="note" | 628.8 m ||class="fn org" | KVLY-TV mast || class="label" | Blanchard, North Dakota || nnn} || class="note" | Guyed Mast ||
with the addition of classes "vcard", "note", "fn org", "label" & "note" (second use) and a {[tl|coord}}. Note that not every item on the second page appears on the first.
Thank you. Andy Mabbett | Talk to Andy Mabbett 20:37, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
- I could probably just whip up a local script to do this and make a single manual edit rather than running it through a bot. I'll take a look and see how tough it looks. ɑʀкʏɑɴ 21:33, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
- Note - I've put up an intermediate version to verify that this is waht you are looking for. If you wanted the coordinates in the same column as the location I can make that cahnge pretty easily. As for your microformatting stuff, the way you present it above is causing the table to become misformatted. ɑʀкʏɑɴ 22:46, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Bot to notify members of user categories scheduled for deletion
I was slightly miffed to find that a category my user page was in was deleted, after a debate I was completely unaware of. I only found out when my userpage was changed to remove the redlink. I feel that users should be notified when user categories are thus debated, and that a bot is ideal for this kind of task. Totnesmartin 21:34, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
- I strongly disagree with this idea for a bot. In addition to being a non-essential task (user categories are probably among the least important of pages on Wikipedia), it implies a degree of ownership/control over userpages that is not afforded by WP:UP. It's not as if removing a redlinked category changes the layout or content of your userpage ... it's a minor, technical thing. Do we notify the contributor to articles in a category that is nominated for deletion? No, even though articles are infinitely more important than userpages and user categories. We don't even have required notification of article creators when their articles are nominated (I proposed the idea a few months ago and it was solidly rejected). -- Black Falcon (Talk) 22:38, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
- I don't understand the need for this. Why not use your watchlist? --Kbdank71 01:19, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
- No, no, no. This bot would be spamming thousands of user talk pages regarding these discussions. There would be a flood of complaints regarding these messages. --After Midnight 0001 23:11, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
- Then the bot should emphasise that it's a discussion, not a vote - the CfD admin can easily weed out insubstantial nonarguments; after all, this happens at AfD's where Wikiprojects flag up relevant debates. Totnesmartin 10:12, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
- These are not parallel situations. Wikiprojects place a single notice on the project page. You are talking about sending out thousands of notices. --After Midnight 0001 13:48, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
Will the bot be called VotestackingBot? --Gmaxwell 15:37, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Add hCard to lists of impact craters
I would like someone, please, to add (additional) hCard microformat markup to each of:
- List of impact craters on Earth
- List of impact craters in Africa
- List of impact craters in Asia
- List of impact craters in Australasia and Antarctica
- List of impact craters in Europe
- List of impact craters in Canada
- List of impact craters in USA and Central America
- List of impact craters in South America
such that, for example:
|- |Vredefort |South Africa |300 km |2.02 billion |align=right|
or
|- class="vcard" |class="fn org"|Vredefort |South Africa |300 km |2.02 billion |align=right|
becomes:
|- class="vcard" |class="fn org"|Vredefort |class="label"|South Africa |class="note"|300 km |2.02 billion |align=right|
with the addition of classes "vcard", "fn org", "label" and "note", if not already present.

Large(ish) batch of double-redirects
Hi. I just moved Characters in Bleach to List of Bleach characters per MOS and a request at WP:RM#Uncontroversial proposals. Normally I fix all the double redirects by hand, but in this case there are 111 of them, and many point to specific sections in the target, which makes my usual quick copy-paste method much less efficient.
I would be grateful if someone could put a bot on this task. -GTBacchus(talk) 06:13, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Please could someone make the changes detailed at Talk:List of road junctions in the United Kingdom/BOTREQ? Thank you. Andy Mabbett | Talk to Andy Mabbett 17:07, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
- I don't see a consensus anywhere that such a change should be done. Perhaps talk a bit then come back? —— Eagle101Need help? 15:50, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
- I don't believe that's necessary. I just created the pages concerned, by splitting (with consensus!) one very long one; and the first half of the proposed changes (I've just re-ordered them) will complete that task - the very first one is a most-needed bug-fix.
- The changes to add hcard microformats are uncontroversial, and have plenty of precedent, not least in the completed requests. above. Andy Mabbett | Talk to Andy Mabbett 19:45, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
Generating an unused templates list

quick bot request
is there any way a bot can be briefly/quickly made for me as to set all images uploaded for either a set of articles or all i upload(ik i can check the box, but i have about 80 of them), the reason i ask is because i basically manage a series of articles and i try to keep up with them all, message me on my talk page if you need any more info or what not... - A bot cannot edit your watchlist, or access it, unless it runs under your account. For watching them, its easier to just watchlist them yourselves, unless there is hundreds. Also, a category would be deleted, there is no real use for a "Images uploaded by user X" category. Easiest way is to link them all from a user subpage, and then use the Related Changes to show a watchlist-style changes list for them. Infobox Biography to Infobox Person cleanup
Infobox Biography has been redirected to Infobox Person. Per consensus at Template talk:Infobox Person#Conclusion and Template talk:Infobox Person#Redirects completed, it would be a good idea for the legacy property names and instances of the former to be changes to match the latter (which currently recognises both alternatives) (or is that a job for "smackbot"?). My Bot
CiterBot is going to me my bot. This bot can can cite any article wherever it needs to be cited! For example, if my bot spots an article with unreferenced, it automatically adds a "citation needed" template to the article or section. -- PNiddy Go! 0 15:36, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
- ... why have the redundancy? — madman bum and angel 16:09, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
- The citation needed tag is for individual sentences - it would be impossible for a bot to detect exactly which sentences needed the tag. The redundancy is unneeded otherwise. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 21:27, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
- I don't get this - are you wanting someone to write a bot for this purpose, write you a bot, or are you wanting to write/run a bot? If you are wanting someone to write you a bot, I could possibly do something for you. Not this task, but a simpler task, like substituting templates. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 21:48, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
- I object to this idea, oftentimes the unreferenced tag is used for only one sentence and doesn't mean the whole article or section needs a citation. No need for redundancy in taggings, articles can get cluttered in tags very quickly. --Android Mouse 23:52, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
Eurovision Articles
I need a bot to remove any instance of the European Union template from the talk pages of all articles in Category:Eurovision songs and its various layers of sub-categories. The template was originally put there by Alphachimp's bot Alphachimpbot at the request of a now banned user Parker007. My (now archived) discussions with Alphachimp can be read User talk:Alphachimp/Archive 14#BOT gone crazy ... must be destroyed!!!!! and User talk:Alphachimp/Archive 14#Further to Eurovision articles discussion.
The Eurovision Song Contest has no connection with the European Union and, in any case, falls well outside the scope of Wikipedia:WikiProject European Union. (See the scope statement on the mainpage and this discussion on the talk page. You might also read the page on the European Broadcasting Union which runs the Eurovision Song Contest.)
I found it difficult to convince Alphachimp to undo these changes. He is also currently on an Wikibreak and unlikely in the position to run his bot.
If anyone wants to they might also add the Eurovision template to the articles in the Category:Eurovision songs category that don't have it already, as this would be the approtiate WikiProject. Caveat lector 12:21, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
