Earlier talk
I've moved discussions prior to May 1, 2005 from this page to archive pages (as listed below). A few of the items I've simply got rid of - if I have, it's simply that it was trivial and/or stuff which has been dealt with, and is therefore no longer relevant. The deletion is not a reflection of my opinion of the writers!

multiple stub templates?
hi grutness, apologies if i could have easily found the answer to this somewhere else, but i haven't seen it- what is the policy on multiple stub templates? ie, is it ok for an article to be a stub in several different categories, or should it only be in one category? it doesn't seem that a stub should be three different kinds of stub, but i'm not sure what the other option would be if it fits into several categories/projects/etc. thanks alot. --Heah (talk) 05:18, 21 May 2005 (UTC)
- Hi Heah - Stub policy is going through a major rewrite at the moment, but the current draft's wording says If an article overlaps two potential categories, two different stub templates may be used, but using more than two is strongly discouraged. (The full current policy draft is at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Stub_sorting, BTW) Grutness...wha?
Glasgow-related edits
WP has a keen new contributor by the name of Babyoil, who probably means well, but, er, well, a look at some of the contributions may explain. I've reverted all those to Glasgow (of which 10% might have some merit, but I lacked the stamina to look); but those to Maryhill, etc., are quite beyond me. As you've done some work on these pages, you might like to keep an eye open for further contributions. -- Hoary 05:23, 2005 May 21 (UTC)

- No, it's fine. But damn, I always wish that welcome messages and the like didn't urge people to "be bold". I wasn't at all bold when I started, and my lack of boldness (plus my ability to spell, etc.) saved people a lot of trouble. Re-reversion of Glasgow coming soon -- if not by somebody else, then by me. -- Hoary 06:20, 2005 May 21 (UTC)

Substub template deletion discussion
I just noticed today that Template:Substub was gone, and went looking for why. The deletion log points to TfD, but there is nothing about it anywhere on the TfD archives. I managed to find the WSS discussion, which also mentioned a TfD discussion. Finally, I found on the TfD history that the discussion was in fact at Template talk:Substub#Vote for deletion.
While most of the argument was on the WSS talk page (and, after reading it, I agree {{substub}} is not needed anymore), I believe the TfD discussion should not be lost.
Could you please either undelete Template talk:Substub or copy the discussion to the TfD archives?

Speedy Deletion Request
Can you please delete these:
- User:Apollomelos and User talk:Apollomelos, never been banned and never vandalized, I am leaving the project because I no longer have the time to spare contributing to often controversial topics in which I must spend 75% of my time explaining the information to users who did not even bother to read up on the topics and thus are often surprised
and i found the recent comments lodged when another user nominated me for adminship to be beyond offensive, borderline fanatic, attacking me for previous votes in which i supported artwork that contained nudity whilst the morality police tried to destroy them all, furthermore the usage of the word "agenda" when none of my articles have NPOV notices on them Apollomelos 20:03, 21 May 2005 (UTC)

Australia stubs
Hi there, yeah I figured out the australia-geo-stub thing for a couple of them. Will do for all in future. Are you really familliar with stub templates? Whenever I try to load the template page it doesn't want to work. If I'm unsure about which stub to use, could I ask you? I'm already familliar with quite a few though. Stub matter
Hi there! I was asked to write an article for the Signpost on recent policy or guideline-related matters. Since there has been a lot of things to do with templates recently, I decided to take that as a sub-topic. One of the matters addressed is the recent deprecation of Template:Substub. So what I'd like to ask is, if you can spare the time, could you please look at my draft at User:Radiant!/WikiPrudence and see if there are any glaring errors or omissions? Thanks. Your edits to the article: Serbian Cyrillic
Might I ask what is the reason for you placing <caron> next to certain letters which are listed in the article: Serbian Cyrillic, and replacing the letter with the caron with the same letter without it? I noticed you done this to all the letters with a caron, besides the letter č. Why all that? 61.68.20.113 12:54, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

You are right Grutness. Most people in this category are likely to be figures prior to 1949. For modern people the socio-political problem would be some Taiwanese people won't consider themselves Chinese people, though they may not deny their Chinese ancestry. For Hong Kong and Macao there is no such problem, but for Hong Kong the category contains quite a lot of non-Chinese ethnic people, and would make it difficult to be simply placed as a subcategory. — Instantnood 12:50, Jun 6, 2005 (UTC)
- Hopefully the Taiwanese identity won't be, and it'd be better to ask Mababa and other folks at Taiwanese notice board for their advice. Would be nice to add a link to the Hong Kong people stubs category at the Chinese category, and the other way round as well. — Instantnood 13:03, Jun 6, 2005 (UTC)

Whereas, the level of discussion and progress on the abovementioned page has dropped to a record level of none; no constructive commments have been made on existing awards since May 17, 2005,
Whereas, many "Vote or Die!" have been left open, namely two, as a result of this lack of discussion,
Whereas, nine proposals lie untouched by Wikipedian hands,

Template what?
I assume you were talking about Template:ethno-stub. I had simply forked it to separate ethnic groups and general ethnology stubs. Whats the heck's wrong with that? -SV|t 04:41, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- That might have been what you were trying to do, but what you actually did was move some items into ethnic-stub, then delete the original template. As to what's wrong with that, well firstly there was no discussion about making a new template and stub category, and secondly, the deleted template was on over 200 articles, so they all suddenly sprouted redlinks. My edits reverted
Why did you revert my edits on the stub template? Do you have a reason for this? • Thorpe • 11:58, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Numerous stub-related pages refer to the extra load placed on servers by using icons in heavy-use templates, and there seems to be general consensus as to not using them in such cases (note the number of types of stub template that have had their icons removed in recent times). Although Template:stub is not the high-use template it once was, it could easily become so again, so - until such time as the server load problems are overcome - having an icon on it is not a good idea. See [[3]] for details. Grutness...wha? 01:50, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi,
Good edits, (glad you can spell!) the problem I'm having now is not being able to get hold of any decent reference books over here. New Zealand architecture has been a bit overlooked here to say the least. Coincidence you know Donovan, I've heard there aren't many of you down there. I had a great kiwi friend at school (he broke my arm in a rugby match) you probably know him too - big ugly bloke has a farm and four children who have gone feral.
That's interesting about the Presbyterians not having cathedrals (I'll check that out) I thought it was just the 1st church to be designed. There seems to be some confusion on the internet as to whether he actually designed Larnach Castle, one site says it was designed "oversees", to my eyes it could only have originated in NZ or Oz and the majority seem to give it to him. Some more pictures would be great, Donovan's are good but it would be better in daylight - shame they hung crystal chandeliers from a gothic ceiling, but I don't suppose that's Lawson's fault. There must be bit more on the scandal at the asylum, I can dig out - and the house you mention - I've found a little on it, really need a classical one to balance Larnach. Found a good site so one should turn up. Regards.Giano | talk 07:55, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Would you do anything differently?
Hey Grutness, I've got a question for you. Right now I'm proposing on the Spanish wikipedia that they change its stub sorting system to be similar to the one we have here. I'd like to know if you'd do anything differently if you could – is there stuff about the current system that you don't like or whatever that I should try to avoid if/when the changeover occurs in the spanish wikipedia? I'm planning to start a stubs wikiproject to keep everything organized, like we have here, but let me know if you can think of anything that I should watch out for. Also, if you don't mind, I'll probably be asking you for advice about all this over the coming weeks. Thanks in advance for your help! --Spangineer (háblame) 15:56, Jun 16, 2005 (UTC)
- Ooo. Good question. I think the two big bugbears are consistency of naming and the proliferation of "unauthorised" templates. So I'd have liked it if there were some rules in place for keeping the naming of stub templates and categories consistent - the stub category names should be consistent with the names of the categories they feed into, too. And I'd make sure there were big notices everywhere telling people not to make new templates without going through a discussion process at WP:WSS first! Grutness...wha? 01:31, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- When you say consistency of naming, could you give me an example of something that's not consistent? For example, do you think it's consistent having a Us-geo-stub in the US Geography category? Also, could you point me to any discussion that took place over what type of stub sorting system to use (the Spanish folks currently use something like {{stub about|sports}} or {{stub about|soccer players}}, which in my opinion isn't too nice for customizing text and stuff, though it does avoid the proliferation of templates). I'd like to know if you guys went through all of that discussion when you started. Thanks. --Spangineer (háblame) 10:47, Jun 17, 2005 (UTC)
- I may be in the minority, but I don't like Us-geo-stub or Uk-geo-stub, since I feel that they should be capitalised like the proper nouns they represent (they redirect to them: US-geo-stub and UK-geo-stub). But more importantly it's things like {{cricket stub}}, {{SoapChar}}, {{Mathbiostub}}, which don't fit in with the standard "xx-stub" format, ambiguous names like {{bio-stub}} (biography or biology?), and things which change format (We have {{UK-hist-stub}}, {{US-hist-stub}}, and {{Russian-history-stub}}, for instance). There are quite a lot like this listed on Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Naming guidelines.
- As to the second question, no... we largely made it up as we went along, I think. But have a look through the pages of WP:WSS - there may well be something there that is of use (including the naming guideline page I just named). Grutness...wha?
Thanks for the {{US-geo-stub}} guidance
Thanks for the guidance during the split of {{US-geo-stub}}. -- Fingers-of-Pyrex 20:38, 2005 Jun 16 (UTC)
- :) no problem. Hope it was useful! Remember it's just suggestions, though, based on doing this sort of thingg before. I don't think there are any set rules for this sort of thing! Grutness...wha?
Unsafe characters again
I recall that there was a problem with your browser and Icelandic characters some time ago; I don't know if you ever found a fix for that. - No, I never found the answer, other than converting it to the safe characters. I didn't notice that one, sorry. In thin this case, it would be Nýja Sjáland. The is: link must have been added since I previously edited the page. Grutness...wha? 02:07, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks, I've changed the link.-gadfium 02:16, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Qeqertarsuatsiaq
- You made more changes than you intended when editing Qeqertarsuatsiaq, which was on my watchlist from last time you edited it. You were thinking of switching to Firefox; I really think you need to remember that this issue is as much about character-unsafe browsers as it is about browser-unsafe characters, and that the switch to native Unicode in MediaWiki 1.5 will make things considerably worse. Susvolans (pigs can fly) 17:01, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Well, there are two things here... firstly I'm sure I'm not the only one using the browser I'm using, so if I breaks something so will others using the same browser. The second thing is that I am using Firefox now. Grutness...wha? 03:34, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Philippines-geo-stub
Sure thing. A question though... Eventually I want all those articles to look like this: Amlan, Negros Oriental, complete with list of barangays (local city/town divisions) and a locator map. Would you still consider that article a stub? TheCoffee 04:42, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- That's less stubby, but it still looks like a stub. It needs a bit more text than the vital statistics and a list of barayas: perhaps a couple of sentences about the history of the place, what the name means, main industry, whether the population's all near the coast, any important features... that sort of thing. It doesn't need to be very long - have a look at the description of Lakewood, Zamboanga del Sur for an example of something that is beyond the stub stage. San Isidro, Davao Oriental is better still, but you wouldn't need as much as that unless you really felt keen on writing! Grutness...wha?

Thank you!
Thank you for correcting my report.

- That's fine, no need to thank me! That's what Wikipedia is all about - someone writes something, someone comes along and adds or amends, and so on. Grutness...wha?
Unlocking
James, you can go ahead and unlock my user page. We can always revert on sight. Thanks for locking it earlier. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 14:30, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Adminship
Hey there, man. I can't say that I have never considered it... I do believe that I am a fairly balanced editor and that I have reached a point where I know the Wikipedia and its system well enough, but still, I am not as popular as most people on RfA, despite my sizable sizable number of edits. I am, however, willing to see how things will turn out. If you feel comfortable with the idea, then yes, I am very glad with the prospect of you nominating me. Best regards. --Sn0wflake 00:08, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)
You added Snowflakes' nom within JoJan's. I have moved it to the proper place. Guettarda 01:02, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- D'oh! Thanks.
- Don't speak too soon - I still have ~40 hours to go on the voote - just 7 oppose votes could sink me :) Guettarda 01:12, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Thanks!
Thanks for supporting me on my RfA. It's always nice to get some positive feedback. I hope I can put my new abilities to some good use. -- grm_wnr Esc 17:32, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Could you please indicate whether your comment on the CFD on this category is or is not intended as a vote? It's kind of ambiguous. Thanks, Radiant_>|< 09:58, Jun 20, 2005 (UTC)
Did you delete my comment?
From the looks of the history, it looks like you deleted a comment of mine at Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion. I find it hard to believe this was intentional. What happened? -- Samuel Wantman 10:56, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)
