Cathedral High School is a private, Catholic Institution in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. It serves more than 1,200 students in grades 9 to 12. It is located within the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis, and is run independently by the Brothers of Holy Cross

The school was founded as a boys high school by the Brothers of Holy Cross in 1918. In the 1970s, with the departure of the Brothers, a non-profit trust was developed by Robert V. Welch, other parents and a lay board in an effort to keep Cathedral alive. As part of that change, the school moved from its longtime home in Downtown Indianapolis to its present location at 56th and Emerson Streets -- the site of the former all-girls Ladywood St. Agnes Academy. That change also facilitated the admission of girls to Cathedral High School.

The school is still run as a Catholic organization, and Catholic teachings are part of the curriculum.

In early 2007, Cathedral's use of a leprechaun in a fighting stance, which it had shared with the University of Notre Dame, was contested by Notre Dame, the owner's of the trademarked logo. Cathedral High school agreed to stop using the logo in the future. [1]

Sports

  • In 2005 the Cathedral Men's Lacrosse team was crowned state champions after an undefeated season and blood-bath championship game.[2]
  • In 2006, Cathedral's Football team defeated Concord 38-14 in the IHSAA 4A State Championship at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. The title is the 6th IHSAA Football Championship in the school's history (3A: 1986, 1992; 4A: 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2006). Cathedral's only losses came to national perennial powerhouse Cincinnati St. Xavier and Indiana perennial powerhouse and rival Roncalli[3]
  • Also in 2006, Cathedral's Volleyball team defeated powerhouse Muncie Central 3-1, giving the Irish their fifth IHSAA State Championship (3A: 1997-98, 1999-00, 4A: 2001-02, 2003-04, 2006-07)[4]
  • As of the end of fall sports season, Cathedral stands as the private school with the most IHSAA state titles (17)[5]

Cathedral was a former football powerhouse. Today they are better known for their nationally ranked boys' and girls' volleyball programs; both were state champions for the 2006-2007 school year as well. The girls' team comes in at 14th in the country, and the boys rank fifth in the nation. Current seniors include Caroline Lemke, Jenna Queally, Julie Dobson, Patrick O'Connor, Nick Mackall, Will Brady, and Nick Tsangaris.

Theatre

The theatre program at Cathedral (known by students as "Catheatre") regularly produces four shows and a musical per school year, in addition to a Comedy Sportz program. The first half of the year, students perform in a Festival of One Acts, a fall play, a children's show, and a rookie show for underclassmen--all of which but the fall play are directed by students. The spring musical (and the fall show) are directed by the staff director for theatre and assistant directed by a student. Programs include popular shows such as Our Town and Fiddler on the Roof. The theatre department has been producing shows in the Joe O'Malia Performing Arts Center since 1990. The current director at Cathedral is Mr. Terry Fox, who is a fucktard.

Clubs

Cathedral High School has a very diverse selection of campus clubs and activities. They range from clubs found in many high schools such as the school newspaper, to religiously oriented clubs such as the liturgy planning committee and recently revealed bridge kids. By time of graduation, more than 96% of students will have participated in a club or sport.

Trivia

  • The buildings were at one time connected by an underground system of tunnels -- those tunnels have since been sealed.
  • In 1988 and again in 2004 the school was honored as a Blue Ribbon School.
  • Before 1942, Cathedral was not apart of the IHSAA so any titles they won were not accepted by the IHSAA (and still aren't).
  • Cathedral was the first non-all black school to play Crispus Attucks HS, at the time an all-black school, in athletics.
  • Cathedral has one of the highest percentage in the U.S. of graduates to go on to a four year college.

School Song

Cathedral's school song is called "The Fight Song". It can be heard at any Cathedral High School sporting event or pep assembly. It was composed in the 1920's by a Cathedral student.

"Dear Old Cathedral, here's to you Here's to your colors, gold and blue, We'll cheer you onward everyone, Whether the battle is lost or won. So here's to your sons, Your fighting team Let your banners stream, And we will proudly wave them to the sky As we cheer for Cathedral High."
