Marketing of Halo 3

The marketing for Halo 3 has been extensive and is planned to be epic in scope. Much of the advertising to date has focused on appealing to the general public, rather than just hardcore fans of the game. Microsoft has announced the launch of an international advertising campaign using the Forerunner Structure imagery (often with massive banners hung from city skyscrapers).

The first public look at Halo 3 came in the form of a real-time cinematic trailer shown at Microsoft's press conference at E3 2006. The trailer is set in the dry plains of Africa, a few miles away from New Mombasa's remains, around a third of the way through the game. Parts of the broken space elevator and bridge are in the background, along with the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. The Master Chief is slowly revealed through smoke and dust, holding the renewed assault rifle, occasionally obscured by distorted overlaid images of the artificial intelligence Cortana transmitting a message:

"I have defied gods and demons."
"I am your shield; I am your sword.[1]"
"I know you; your past, your future"
"This is the way the world ends."

Also note that before 'Cortana' speaks she is disantly heard to cry out in pain (around 0:30), suggesting that she is being used, maybe violently, to transmit this message by someone other than herself.

In the "Behind the Scenes" video,[2] it is stated, "We don't know what has happened to her... We don't know it's Cortana. It could be any sort of bizarre, almost Satanic sort of voice. Something seems wrong."

In the trailer, a massive Covenant fleet holds position over an enormous crater. Inside of which is a circular, Forerunner related, metallic structure over three miles (4.8 km) in diameter. Above the structure is a swirling cloud, given depth by parallax mapping techniques. Covenant Banshees and Phantoms (dropships) fly towards it.

The structure begins to move and a brilliant light from its center whites out the screen. Cortana delivers with her final line (detailed above) and the trailer ends with the tagline "Finish the fight". This tagline has been used throughout the Halo 3 marketing campaign as seen on official t-shirts, along with the imagery of the Forerunner structure.

After the E3 showing, Bungie demonstrated some of the game's visual effects to the press at the conference. The Assault Rifle was fired to demonstrate that the muzzle flash was reflected off Master Chief's visor in real-time.

The trailer fanfare sports a wholly new arrangement, the addition of trumpets, and the noted absence of Halo's signature "monks."[2]

ESPN TV "Starry Night" advertisement

On December 4, 2006, a 60-second CGI commercial for Halo 3 was aired on ESPN, followed by a release on Xbox.com and Xbox Live. Its airing marked the start of the first phase of sign ups on Halo3.com for the spring Beta. The video is a mix of CGI and gameplay footage, and was created entirely by Digital Domain, using a mix of live action (real actors) (for the two children), the game's gameplay-engine, animation (using Bungie-supplied assets) and CGI.[3] The commercial was directed by Joseph Kosinski.

The ad comprises two scenes. The first shows two anonymous children lying in long grass looking at the night sky, wondering whether they will ever meet beings from "up there". The location and identity of the children are deliberately ambiguous; this being up to the interpretation of the viewer. Although some believe it is a younger Master Chief (about a couple of years later after he was recruited for the SPARTAN II project) and another unnamed recruit. This scene then cuts to the Master Chief's point of view, waking from unconsciousness after being thrown from a vehicle. The second-to-last line of dialogue from the children in the grass scene plays over in Master Chief's head, strongly suggesting (as may have already been assumed) that Master Chief is looking back into his own past; i.e. he was one of those children, contemplating with a friend or possibly family member. Upon applying his helmet two voices are heard, the first is a female child's voice similar if not the same as the girl in the field saying "Time to go" (around 0:28); the second follows immediately (around 0:29) and appears to be Cortana pleading "Chief, leave". He is on Earth, in the middle of the Covenant invasion around the events of the E3 2006 Announcement.

In the advertisement, the Master Chief's secondary weapon is stored magnetically on his back, or on a leg holster for smaller weapons; mirroring one of the new visual features in the game.

The Master Chief is separated from his in-game allies; the human Marines. He is then attacked by plasma mortar impacts from the game's Covenant tank, named the Wraith. He is then seen to evade being hit by an almost direct impact, with the aid of the previously unseen "Bubble Shield" equipment (resembling a transparent geodesic dome). The Bubble Shield device itself, appearing slightly different than it does in the actual game. He then "Jumps in" to engage a group of Covenant Brutes and Wraith tanks upon which time, the ad cuts to the credits. The ad closes with the same "HALO 3", "FINISH THE FIGHT - 2007", the Xbox 360 logo and additionally the "Jump In" slogan of the Xbox 360 marketing campaign.

Reaction to the advertisement was enthusiastic. It was the first cinematic-quality glimpse into the Halo Universe, designed to appeal to a mass audience. Fans of the series immediately started picking over the imagery for clues relating to the plot or gameplay of Halo 3.

The advertisement was aired only once, but remains available for download on many websites, including the official Bungie website.

Recently it was used again for the Iris ARG where in any kiosk having an Xbox 360 has a secret section when looking at Halo 3.[4] When selected, the trailer will play but as Master Chief is about to put on his helmet, a message will pop up (Trailer with message), which is a clue for a message puzzle in the ARG.

E3 2007 "A Hero Must Rise" trailer

On July 11, 2007, a new trailer commonly nicknamed the "Vermin Trailer", debuted at E3 2007. A hostile Covenant Prophet growls over an initially black screen:

You are - all of you - vermin. Cowering in the dirt, thinking... what? That you might escape the coming fire? Your world will burn until its surface is but glass!

During his speech, scenes of Covenant warships descending, firing energy beams, 'glassing' the planet and devastating cities; Brutes attacking Marines and other violence towards the human race punctuate his threats. It is followed by images of Master Chief fighting back, sometimes alongside The Arbiter, and large scale vehicular battles. There is also a brief cameo of Miranda Keyes, swinging both her pistol and shotgun defensively to protect herself, and Cortana collapsing in pain before Master Chief, The Arbiter, a Forerunner "Monitor" (most likely 343 Guilty Spark) and another unknown Elite. Another shot reveals Master Chief grabbing the Arbiter, holding a pistol between his mandibles (note that for a brief second here, Master Chief is seen to be pushing a fellow marine out his path in what looks to be a defensive gesture) It takes place in the Halo 3 intro cut-scene in wich Master Chief had crashed due to (What seems to be Master Chief jumping off Truth's Forerunner ship as they landed on earth) He is considered dead by Sergeant Major Avery J. Johnson who was in company of a hand full of marines. Later in the scene a marine is briefing him on how "Your armour is still in partial lockdown" (Due to the crash) At this moment the Arbiter makes his entrance into the scene by slowlly appearing behind a marine. As his active camouflage begins to wear off Master Chief immediately notices and apparently takes a marine's pistol ( If not Johnson's or his own) and as quoted before, grabs the Arbiter and holds the pistol between his mandibles.Johnson then says "Chief wait, the Arbiter is with us...Come on now, we have enough trouble without you two trying to kill each other." In yet another scene, the Forerunner ship can be seen on Earth in the background. The battles intensify to the point of brutal space battles and even a Scarab being utterly destroyed.

The Brute Chopper (a new, Ghost-like vehicle) is also briefly shown, as well as a Warthog variant: instead of a turret, the back of the Warthog holds two additional Marines.

The video concludes with the evocative vision of Covenant warships flying at night away from the mysterious "Ark" structure seen in the E3 2006 debut trailer, and ends with a final shot of a pensive Master Chief gazing down at the panel where Cortana collapsed. The trailer then cuts to the Halo 3, Bungie, and Xbox 360 logos sequentially. Unlike the E3 2006 trailer, this trailer had the characteristic Halo Gregorian chant singing in the first 25 seconds, until the voice begins the "Your world will burn" sentence, afterwards the audio is comprised of the piano music similar to that used in the E3 2006 trailer. The trailer is similar in audio and visual style to the attract mode in both of the previous games, with scenes from both campaign cinematics and action.

It has also been noted that during the Pelican's atmospheric reentry, extremely large "towers" can be seen on a world (which can be seen to be a Halo for a brief moment). The reason for visiting the Halo is unclear and the magnitude of the structures has not been seen before on a Halo.

It is also notable that several times in the trailer, while in first-person view, the game lists four grenades, instead of three. Although very small on-screen, the mysterious fourth grenade bears an uncanny resemblance to some brute grenade concept art. According to the description, the fourth grenade is an incendiary grenade called the "Super Double Cap Bomb". This has since been confirmed by Bungie as, in fact, an incendiary grenade.

Fans have also commented on the environment seen in the background of the final scene in the trailer, where Master Chief looks upon the panel before him, claiming that there are small pods that hold a striking resemblance to those seen in the previous Halo games, known to have a Flood origin.

The trailer appeared shortly thereafter on Xbox Live Marketplace and Xbox.com, as well as other game video sites.

"Arms Race"

Also shown at E3 2007 was a live action Halo 3 video titled Halo 3: Arms Race This video contains both live action and CGI scenes and shows UNSC Marines arming themselves as Pelicans and Warthogs are manufactured in preparation to "Finish the Fight". It is a collaboration between Weta Workshop, Neill Blomkamp (the proposed director of the Halo movie) and Bungie Studios. When asked about the short, Neill said that he hoped that it would help to interest movie studios in his currently on-hiatus movie project, since it lost its studio support last October. It has since been confirmed that Arms Race was one of a series of short films currently in production.[5]

"Combat"

A follow-up video also directed by Neill Blomkamp, "Combat" combines CGI and live action to show two ODSTs fighting against several Brutes, under fire from Plasma Pistols, Spikers and Banshee bombing runs. The ODSTs have a Warthog delivered to them under fire by a Pelican and attempt to escape, but a Spiker round penetrates the windscreen and wounds the driver, leading the Warthog to crash into a wall.

"Believe" Campaign

A series of videos created by visual effects artist Stan Winston and director Rupert Sanders (known for video game advertisements) were made to depict a generic repesentation of a series of battles in Halo 3.[6] The central element of the videos was a massive diorama over 1200 square feet in size and over 12 feet tall, with handcrafted human and Covenant figures each standing eight to twelve inches high. The diorama was large enough to fill an entire studio.[7] A mockumentary "Making Of" video appeared on Xbox.com on September 14, 2007.[8]

The videos fueled further speculation that Master Chief would die in Halo 3.[9][10] However, according to Bungie, the marketing team making the videos did not know what actually happened to the Master Chief in the game, so speculation based on them alone was most likely unfounded.[11]

Microsoft also launched a special "Believe" site, calling it "The John-117 Monument" to those who perished in the greatest battle in human history. The site allowed people to explore the diorama freely, and use a camera icon to take their own pictures of the diorama to create wallpaper screenshots with the Halo 3 logo. Special "hotspots" contained information and 3D models of various combatants, personal accounts of the battle from individual soldiers, or the videos mentioned below.

While nothing has been stated, Elites are strangely missing from the advertisements, especially due to how important they are to the Halo universe.

"The Museum"

In the first part of the "Believe" series of commercials, titled "The Museum", a live-action video featured an elderly UNSC 30 year veteran, Maj. Pawel Czernek, one of the few surviving combatants who fought in The Battle of New Mombasa. Shot in a documentary circa the turn of the 27th century at The Museum of Humanity, he related his role in the battle while examining a diorama of the battle in a glass case - he had manned a ditched Warthog's turret - and described the morale Master Chief engendered during the battle ("We knew Master Chief was still in the fight. He gave us hope.") The video ended with one word on a black screen: "BELIEVE".[12] The video debuted online on September 11, 2007, and referenced a new Halo 3 TV ad to show on September 14, 2007.[13]

"Believe"

The next video, titled "Believe", featured the same diorama, with the camera sweeping over it accompanied by a single piano melody, an excerpt from Frédéric Chopin's Raindrop Prelude (Op. 28, Prelude No. 15 in D-flat major)[14], to reveal an apparently defeated Master Chief being held in the air by a Brute in the middle of the battle depicted in the diorama, in a frozen moment in time. The Master Chief suddenly animated briefly, as a grenade (referred to in the previous video) activated in his hand, and raised his head to look into the camera. After the scene faded to black, it ended with the words: "BELIEVE IN A HERO".[15]

A special extended 90 second version appeared on Xbox.com on September 14, 2007, featuring more specific incidents and violence during the battle. The video also differed in that it just said "BELIEVE" at the end.[8]

"Hunted"

Developer documentaries

"Making of E3 2006"

Shortly after the release of the original announcement trailer, Bungie released a short documentary about it. In it, they discuss the challenges they faced in producing it, as well as offering commentary on what was shown from the perspective of a viewer. There are also several shots of different angles of the area shown in the trailer.

"Et tu, Brute?"

The "Et tu, Brute?" (a pun on the famous line from Julius Caesar) ViDoc (a portmanteau of video documentary), released on December 20, 2006, focuses on how the Brutes have been almost completely redesigned for Halo 3 to better reflect the idea that they are meant to be a worthy adversary for the player. The ViDoc shows pre-alpha graphics, none of which are final, and some elements may be completely redesigned before launch.[17]

The ViDoc explains that the three classes of Brutes have been differentiated, the same way Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 featured different classes of Elites, Grunts, and Jackals. They are all shown with much heavier armor than the Brutes in Halo 2:[17]

  • 'Standard' infantry Brutes that wear blue armor held together by buckles.
  • Brute Captains, who wear more elaborate helmets and armor.
  • Brute Chieftains, who have the most elaborate helmets and armor.

The color scheme of Elites in the prior games seems to have been applied to Brutes (blue is the lowest rank, red is higher, and gold is the highest). To reflect the Brutes' violent nature, more violent animations have been created. Examples shown in the ViDoc include a Brute ripping off the arms of a Marine, a Brute ramming a Marine into a vehicle, and another Brute punching the stomach of a Marine lying on the ground.

The AI has also been updated to incorporate the new idea of a "Brute pack". A Chieftain in Halo 3 may order all of its troops to throw grenades at the enemy together, or may decide to focus on attacking one character.[17]

The film also includes some other previously unseen elements, such as dual-wieldable Energy Swords (only used by AI) and the new Spike Grenade.[18] The "Spike Grenades" may stick to any surface except water and release a cone-shaped charge upon explosion. A Brute Chieftain is seen firing a weapon resembling an un-deployed plasma turret from Halo 2. However, the game as shown, is still in a pre-alpha stage, and the graphics and game elements in the ViDoc are currently unconfirmed for final release in the game.

"Is Quisnam Protero Damno!"

"I condemn him whom I trample under my feet."

A ViDoc detailing the development of the multiplayer game was released on April 10, 2007. It highlighted the major ways in which the developers have sought to improve upon the Halo 2 multiplayer game which was so successful. All graphics shown were from an alpha build - no decorators were yet in place, many textures were still only placeholders, and the HDR lighting model was not being used. Nevertheless, the graphics were already demonstrably far superior to the game's predecessors, which is unsurprising as this is a next generation installment for the series. Previously unseen gameplay elements included:[19]

  • A first look at the bubble shield, tripmine, and portable gravity lift.
  • The first look at using the portable machine gun turrets.
  • The first mention of saving played games to be later viewed.
  • At least three new multiplayer maps were shown.
  • An in depth look at how the man cannons (gravity boosters) have replaced the teleport modules that were found in the previous games. Bungie has stated that in pre-development they thought about how to get a player, and some vehicles,[20] across the map.

"Cinema Paradiso"

Was added to Xbox Live on September 20th 2007. It showcased the Forge and saved file features of the game.

Public beta testing

On April 10, 2007, Bungie announced that the public beta testing phase would run from May 16, 2007 at 5 a.m. PDT to June 6, 2007 at 11:59 p.m. PDT. Bungie later announced that the beta would be extended to June 10, 2007 due to problems on the first day (see below). Internal testing progressed for some time at Microsoft before the Public Beta and although the internal test is non-disclosure agreement compliant, leaked footage was put on the Internet showing previously un-revealed weapons, equipment, and other game elements.

Shortly before the Beta began, Bungie endorsed a video of the internal beta made by a Microsoft employee.[21]

Entry into the Halo 3 Beta consisted of three phases;

  • Phase 1: Sign ups on Halo3.com at the time of the "Starry Night" commercial release.
  • Phase 2: "Rule of Three" promotion - be among the first 13,333 to sign up at Halo3.com after playing three hours of Halo 2 on Xbox Live during February 1st-3rd, 2007.
  • Phase 3: Buy/Rent a copy of the Xbox 360 game Crackdown.[22]

Alpha testers were allowed in automatically to the beta.

Additionally, some Beta places were given out to certain community websites in Europe over the Xbox Community Network program. There was also a "Friends and Family" Beta program that started a few days before the public beta; whose participants had already been chosen. Some of whom were Bungie.net members who received a Beta invitational code sent to them on the May 11 via a private message on Bungie.net.[23]

The public portion of the Beta consists of matchmaking play only on three multiplayer maps: Valhalla, High Ground and Snowbound.[24] Bungie has stated that the beta supports split screen for up to two players.[25] The public beta also contains only a limited version of the "saved films" feature, which allows players to save their games after they play them and watch them again later.

Due to a glitch in the public beta, some people were able to get into the custom games menu and even start custom games.[26] The menus show several new gameplay features and settings as well as weapons (i.e. M6G pistol and Covenant energy sword) that weren't available in the matchmaking system.[26]

The beta ended on June 10, 2007 at 11:59 p.m. PDT.

Crackdown issues

On May 16, 2007, the day the public beta began, problems were reported from owners of Crackdown that they could not download the beta. Bungie has made a statement that they had contacted the Xbox Live Authorities and were hoping for only a short delay for those attempting to access the beta via Crackdown. Later the same day, Bungie made an update saying the Microsoft team found a solution and that the issue "will be resolved shortly". [27] At 10:24 p.m. EST, a patch was distributed over Crackdown, fixing the problem. Bungie also announced that the beta would be extended until June 10 to compensate.[27]

Alternate reality game

Similar to the promotional ARG I Love Bees for Halo 2, Halo 3 has its own ARG called Iris.

On June 11, 2007, only a couple hours after the Halo 3 public beta ended, a surreptitious user named "AdjutantReflex" of "CompoundIntelligence" appeared in the official Halo 3 forums on Bungie.net and wrote "This will be a good place to begin." He responded to seemingly random users and their questions in a robotic manner, claiming to be a "Facilitator", whose purpose is the "Facilitation of Array requirements". His responses were vague and written in a gold colored font that individualized himself from the rest of the users, who were unable to change the color of their own font. Reminiscent of the events that introduced the "I Love Bees" alternate reality game, users were quickly led to believe that, because of the circumstances, this was indeed a new ARG from Bungie themselves to hype the forthcoming of Halo 3.

A Circuit City advertisement that wasn't to be seen until the Sunday from which these events occurred had leaked three days early and revealed a Halo 3 Comicthat explained how the Forerunner race came to Earth to build their structures approximately 100,000 years ago. The last page of the comic was interactive and users could slide panels left and right or scratch out objects that revealed numbers. The numbers, 206, 16, 223, and 65, when put together from the interactive panels, formed an IP Address. Because the comic was not to be seen for another three days from June 14, the address, http://206.16.223.65, initially led to nothing.

Moments after the news of the secret address spread across multiple forums and blogs, a website appeared on it named "Transmission Log" that featured a background and a strange countdown.[28][29] The counter was in base 7; Bungie's preoccupation with the number seven is evident in many of their games. The counter was counting down to June 21, the summer solstice or longest day of the year. On June 21, the page was updated, and now showed a 3D rendering of a Forerunner object which could be viewed at any angle.

Pressing a particular circular button on the Forerunner object activates the device, playing a video. When examined closely, the video shows a brief photo of the west coast of Africa again confirming the strong connection between Halo and Africa. Pressing other circular buttons allows the download of numerous different files, including a photo of a Flood infection, a picture of stars, a ship's log, and the text file for the video.

Halo ActionClix

WhizKids announced a special Halo ActionClix collectable miniatures board game[30], which debuted at 2007 ComicCon. The game was released on September 18, 2007, with some game pieces/expansions costing as high as $250 USD. Target gave away two free ActionClix figures for any preorder of Halo 3.[31]

Mountain Dew Game Fuel

Pepsi-Cola announced a new variant of Mountain Dew called Game Fuel. It is a citrus-cherry flavored drink, a possible combination of regular Mountain Dew and/or Baja Blast, and Code Red, containing 73 milligrams of caffeine and 170 calories. The packaging ties in Halo 3, sporting images of a Spartan.[32]

NASCAR Sponsorship

Microsoft will also be sponsoring the #40 car driven by David Stremme for Chip Ganassi Racing in the Dover 400 Nextel Cup Series. The car will have a Halo 3 inspired paintjob featuring the title for the game printed prominently on the hood and rear bumper, as well large pictures of Master Chief on each of the rear fenders.[33] Coincidentally, they will be competing against the #16 car, driven by Greg Biffle, that is sponsored by Nintendo's Wii.[34]

Burger King

Burger King announced a special promotion starting September 24, 2007 (the day before the game's release) in which Master Chief, the Halo 3 logo, and the new "Believe" slogan would appear on large cups and french fry wrappers.[35]

Pontiac

Pontiac announced a sweepstakes with a Halo 3-branded Pontiac G6 GXP Street and being the first to play the game on an IMAX screen as prizes. Pontiac will also have a promotion tour featuring their vehicles. [36]

BD&A Licensed Bags

BD&A issued specialized Halo 3 licensed carrying cases and bags with the Halo 3 logo set to be released September 25, 2007, the day of launch.[37]
