Founded by Lam Hangzi (林行止) and Lo Ziping (羅治平, withrew his share later) who observed the potential of developing an economic journal in the rapid developed city on July 3, 1973, it is still regarded as one of the most influential newspapers in the Chinese media world. It was founded when the stock market dropped greatly in 1973 and was the first ecomomic daily newspaper at that time.
Content of the newspaper
The newspaper contains seven and a half pages everyday, which mainly focuses on economic news and other related issues and is sold in Hong Kong and Macau. The main sections of the Journal include "News", "Investment", "Technology", "Editorials" and "Supplement". For these main topics, they are separated into several smaller sections in which the "News" part contains finance and economics, changes in stock market, economics and business, property markets, political issues ,China news and international news. The 'technology' part includes media and multi-media, while the "supplement" part includes economics and business management, columns and cultures. It is an authorised newspaper which can publish advertisements related to some law issues. Economic professionals also publish some of their articles in the journal to express their views on the economy and newly happened economic events.
The Journal has a circulation of 63,120 copies per day (Jan 2001), and the main reader groups are intellectuals and businessmen, who demand reliable sources of news. The stance of the paper is always regarded as liberal, reflecting the editors' affirmation towards Chicago school of economics.
It plays an important role in relating HKSAR and the PRC governments as many senior officials of PRC regard the Journal as a real reflection of Hong Kong situation. Recently, Hong Kong people have opposed the Article 23. The staff of this newspaper also disagreed to such legislation. 曹志明( 筆名:曹仁超),the director of the Journal, announced that if the government did not modify the article, the Journal would be closed. The reason he provided was that it was dangerous to disclose the truth and express their own thoughts under the Article 23. He also opposed the terms that the police could go into one's house to conduct a search or froze one's assets without the ordinance issued by the court. The next day, the government really made modifications according to the conditions 曹仁超 provided. Hence, it is higly valued by HKSAR and the PRC governments.
