Minnesota

Polisario Front

I'm not trying to get into any sort of article dispute here. I simply was reverting an edit that I recognized as clearly NPOV. I have no opinions regarding this article. In fact, I don't even fully understand the issue. I was only here reverting something NPOV, and am not trying to participate in any argument. My block of this user was not for his/her comments on the article or talk page of Polisario Front. Instead I blocked this user because of the following edits userpage vandalism[2] [3] [4] [5]. But what made me block them was the fact that this user made a threat in an edit [6]. My block would not have been so long, if not for the numerous previous blocks before mine. Minnesota Sports

If you are trying to add sports info about the state of Minnesota, the biggest news ever is probably Lindsay Whalen. She practically turned the Golden Gopher program around single handedly and shattered every record. She is a minnesota basketball icon, IMHO even bigger than Kevin Garnett. The Novels WikiProject Newsletter Issue II - July 2006
Project news The project's automatically generated worklist Novels without Infobox has been worked through giving infoboxes to most of the {{mystery-novel-stub}}s. This is about to get a regeneration probably with new genres. In addition to the raft of articles on the Simon Templar as The Saint novels added last month, then the Modesty Blaise series and now starting on Matt Helm series. All the inital work of one editor! One editor has been putting in sterling work coverting novel articles from "yyyy books" categorization over to "yyyy novels". Again notice that the {{Infobox Book}} now has a new field for "illustrator" for indicating the name of someone who has illustrated the majority of the novel (or book). Member News The project has currently 104 members, 16 joined since the last newsletter in mid June 2006.	From the Members Welcome to the second issue of the Novels WikiProject's newsletter! Use this newsletter as a mechanism to inform yourselves about progress at the project and please be inspired to take more active roles in what we do. Current proposals You may have seen proparations going on behind the scenes with a view to establishing a format "Assessment Department". The aim of this will be to aid our efforts in improving novel articles particularly in tune with WP:1.0 and WP:WVWP methdology. I disagree to your assumption with the Bears article

If these sections are not necessary in the article then the Arsenal F.C. article should be removed from the featured articles list because it has a section involving Arsenal in popular culture. The history section is not as descriptive as the Patroits history because the Bears franchise history is twice as long, and that is why there is a separate daughter article detailing the Bears franchise history. Petition

I agree somewhat. I won't sign it because I don't know if it's anti-wiki. Or, I don't know if anti-wiki is bad. Your petition is trying to address broader issues. My comment is not that it's antiwiki but that it seems like a shoddy method and more convoluted. Something like this needs a long discussion and at least in the short term no stable version should be the first thing people see... unless there is a system. So, I don't want to sign it because I don't agree with it all. show/hide problems

Essjay asked me to take a look at your show/hide problem on your user page. I believe I have fixed it. The transcluded items have to have some blank space and they also seem to be order dependent. You had membership twice so I removed one copy. I reorged membership and put the userbox for the Fascism project on instead of the link, hope that's OK. Project news Two new task forces have been started: Indian military history and Japanese military history. Clarified explanations for the three levels of the importance scale are now available. Monthly assessment statistics are now being compiled. The recently promoted Aleksandr Vasilevsky is the project's one hundredth featured article. We have obtained the services of a bot to assist with the newsletter delivery; much thanks to Grafikm fr for setting this up.	Current proposals and discussions A new round of project coordinator elections has been proposed. The general intent is to increase the number of assistant coordinators from two to six. All project members are invited to comment on the proposal! A discussion about standardizing military unit categories is ongoing. A proposal to require mulitple reviewers for A-Class status seems to have support, but will likely depend on the election of additional coordinators. The creation of a German military history task force has been proposed, but needs further input.

I understand all the jazz about only posting 'official' information, and am glad to see Seau officially labeled 55 on the template now, but I do take offense at being told my edits 'compromise the integrity of pages'. The NFL official team sites are notoriously slow to update when compared to breaking-news blogs, especially one with the integrity of Mike Reiss'. I noticed that you have closed the case. Actually, the issue has long been settled out of band. You might have noted that there were no message exchanges after the first day. September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors! What's New? September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves! Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Hi False Prophet,

Although Nottingham is refraining from editing the Hong Tran page while it is in AfD, his recent edits to the Washington United States Senate election, 2006 page make it seem like this conflict could bleed into other pages, and is likely to start back up on the Tran page after the AfD is closed. Given what I've seen thus far, I'm not optimistic that mediation will lead to a collaborative attitude from Nottingham, but I'm willing to give it a try (and I think I need to before an RfA). Could you begin talking with us on this? Btw, Bobblehead and I have differences of opinion on these articles as well, and in my opinion he was a participant in (and perhaps even the one who started) the edit war on the Hong Tran page, but it looks more to me like he and I will be able to work in a civil and sane manner on continuing disagreements. I will leave it up to you as to whether you want to include him in the mediation discussions.

Since you indicated you would be interested in seeing what the deleted article looked like I have put a copy of it in User:JoshuaZ/Sandbox. I would however make the preliminary statement that DRV is not AfD take 2 but is supposed to be about whether the process was followed (although this DRV is getting to be such a mess I doubt anyone will mind yet another user [[WP:IAR|deciding that it is better to ignore that). Project news A new review process for potential A-Class articles is now operational. Much of the backlog of pre-review articles has already been processed; all project members are invited to take part in future reviews, and to nominate high-quality articles themselves. The automation department, which schedules bulk tasks for bot and AWB processing, is now open; all project members can request new tasks and comment on existing requests. The various requests for articles and images have been consolidated into the combined requests page, which now includes requests for article creation, maps and other images, translation, and article cleanup. Some advice for editors working on featured article candidacies is now available; further suggestions are welcome. A showcase of high-quality articles has been added to the project page; it includes featured and A-Class articles within the project's scope. The Early Modern warfare task force, covering the period from c. 1500 to c. 1792, has been created. A standard category scheme for military conflicts and operations is now available.	Current proposals and discussions Discussion continues about possible enhancements to the project award system. The proposed category scheme for military units and formations is nearing completion; further commments are welcome! A discussion about working on old featured articles with citation problems has begun. Several ideas for new task forces are up for debate.

Auto list news The NovelsInCompleteInfobox has been regenerated at the start of October and was shown to have grown rather than shrunk! So this month I have concentrated my efforts (with some help from Grey Shadow (talk · contribs)) on the novels missing "genre" tags. These "genre-less" have now "all" been dealt with. Hopefully we can break the back of this load of work, but it will need help. It would be nice to get these worklists to a state where they can monitor the newly created articles rather than cleaning the retrospective material.
Collaboration of the Month The Collaboration of the Month is going well. October's collaboration was slightly compromised by the removal of our notice early on; however there were still nearly 80 edits to improve the article. This months Collaboration has been selected by popular vote and is Doctor Zhivago (novel)
Current debates We have a project structure that allows for the formation of special interest task forces (al la "WP:MILHIST".) This is useful for identifying groups of Novels editors who have a common interest. (i.e. Science fiction novels, Crime Novels, Children's novels, Classic literature, Russian novels etc.) Would there be interest out there in setting one or more of these up. Comments please to the General Forum.

Are you ready to get started?

The waiting time over at Admin coaching is long (some people have been waiting in line since July). I'm an admin coach with the project, and for my students I set up a group discussion page so that we could all learn from each other. The scope of this concept has expanded into the Virtual classroom, which is an open forum for the teaching and learning of advanced Wikipedia skills.

Anyone and everyone is welcome to participate, as a student, as a coach, or both. Every week or two a new major topic of discussion or classroom assignment is introduced, usually with a guest writer who presents his or her expertise on the current subject and who remains on hand to answer questions. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the discussions, such as sharing your expertise, asking and answering questions, etc.

The current topic of discussion is vandalism, and our guest writer is Budgiekiller.

All discussions are open-ended, so all previous discussion topics and classroom assignments are still there for viewing and further participation. There are also sections for posting miscellaneous topics and questions, requesting coaching assistance, etc.

In addition to inviting those who would like to learn, I routinely invite experts from all over Wikipedia to come and contribute for the benefit of all. The VC is rapidly turning into a clearing house of the best resources, methods, and techniques known for working on Wikipedia.

You are cordially invited to participate.

Project news A set of five criteria for B-Class status has been introduced; new parameters are available in {{WPMILHIST}} to keep track of articles' progress with regard to these criteria. The implementation of the new naming convention for military units is continuing. The Nordic military history task force has been created. All task forces now have their own sets of assessment statistics, logs, and worklists available. {{Infobox War Faction}} has been created for use with factions participating in a war. A gallery of military related featured pictures has been compiled as part of the project's showcase. Several new category naming conventions have been introduced: All categories classifying military conflicts and operations by country (such as Category:Battles by country) have been changed to use "X involving Y" in place of "X of Y". For example, Category:Battles of France is now Category:Battles involving France. All categories classifying warfare by era (such as Category:Battles by era) have been changed to use "X of the Y era" in place of "Y X". For example, Category:Industrial battles is now Category:Battles of the Industrial era.

The Military history WikiProject Newsletter Issue XII - February 2007
Project news The new consolidated review department—combining the existing project peer review and A-Class review with a listing of project articles undergoing various external featured content candidacies and reviews—is now operational. Two new templates have been introduced: {{Infobox Firearm Cartridge}}, a primary infobox for use with firearm cartridges and artillery shells. {{Command structure}}, an auxiliary infobox designed for use with {{Infobox Military Unit}}. An effort is being made to have task forces maintain annotated bibliographies for their topic areas; several task forces have already begun to construct them. The project reached two important milestones this month: 500 active members and 30,000 articles in the assessment system. A military version of Wikipe-tan has been created; a new userbox featuring one of the images is available for interested project members.	From the coordinators The third project coordinator elections have now concluded. Project news We are on the cusp of having 9000 novel and other narrative prose articles tagged as part of the project. With this volume of articles, we need all the editorial help we can get. Now there are three Task Forces ("Short story", "Science Fiction" & "Crime") - see below Member news The project has currently 214 members, 8 joined & 1 leavers since the last newsletter at the start of February 2007 Other news The Assessment department has managed to assess (in some form) nearly all the main articles. The emphasis will now change to identifying needed article improvement, however keeping a watch on newly tagged articles with a view to properly assess those. A new Peer review department has kicked off with one of my early articles as a starting point. Please do give it a look, start reviewing and suggest other articles that you believe could benefit from another pair of eyes. The Children and Young Adult Literature portal was created by User:KGV, go take a look. Auto list news Currently stalled - if anyone has the means to help out here with re-generation of these list - please do! Current debates The End of Fair Use? is notification of a serious debate going on across WikiPedia. Another possible problem hasn't really got going as a debate but maybe should have. It highlights a need to put in content to articles that asserts "notability" and gives proper referencing to articles. Task Forces Short story task force is about short stories and short story collections. Crime task force is about Crime, Detective & Mystery novels, novellas, novelettes & short stories. Science fiction task force is about Science fiction novels, novellas, novelettes & short stories. Project news The project's scope has been updated to include depictions of military history in cultural media. The Spanish military history task force has been created. The project now has a publication department, which will work on producing collections of military history articles for offline publication. There is now a list of military-related deletion nominations available. Two new sets of guidelines have been introduced: Guidelines for classifying military conflicts and categorizing campaigns Expanded guidelines for citation styles and requesting citations Two new templates are now available: {{Infobox National Military}}, a primary infobox for use on articles about an entire nation's military establishment. {{Service record}}, an auxiliary infobox for documenting a military unit's or ship's service history. The old requested articles page and the automation department have been discontinued.	Current proposals and discussions The new project award structure is nearing completion; a draft currently is up for comment. A proposal for replacing the project's collaboration with a contest scheme is being discussed. Sign-ups for several potential task forces are open; all interested members are encouraged to list themselves! An automated system for locating new articles is currently being tested.

Member news The project has currently 217 members, 5 joined & 2 leavers since the last newsletter at the start of March 2007 Other news A bot compiled list of new literature related pages is now available at Portal:Literature/New pages. The peer review department of the Novels WikiProject is always open for peer reviewing articles. Department & Task Force news We now have five administration Departments which now include an Automation Department which is the home for support and administration of automated update activity. Anyone with such experience and can get involved look in here for work ideas and to make suggestions. The three task forces are gradually growing but need support to succeed. Also if you have further such ideas for co-operation - also let us know. At the Short Story task force we have just started to consider what a standard short story article should ideally include and an article pattern template debate has started here. Auto list news Our Auto Generated lists appear to have lost the editor who created and supported them. If any other editors have the ability and are willing to have a stab at producing replacement updates, please let us know. Project news The new contest department has now run through its first month of competition; Carom and Kevin Myers were tied for first place, with ten points each. All project members are encouraged to submit the articles they're working on as entries. A new level of the project award, the WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves, has been introduced to recognize contributions of truly incredible quality or importance in the area of military history; it is awarded by the project coordinators in the name of the project as a whole. A suggested article structure for articles on firearms has been introduced. Four new task forces, covering Middle Eastern military history, Ottoman military history, South American military history, and Southeast Asian military history, have been created. The project collaboration of the fortnight has been discontinued in favor of the new contest department.		Current proposals and discussions A fresh discussion about the by-nation category system for military personnel has begun; suggestions are very welcome! The use of flag icons in templates is currently being discussed.

Lists especially are an undermanned area of work, and his excellent efforts deserve commendation.

Member news The project has currently 236 members, 7 joined & 0 leavers since the last newsletter at the start of May 2007 Other news The Brothers Karamazov (nom.) was demoted from Featured Article status for concerns over sources, structure, and coverage/focus. The 2007 Wikipedia Selection for schools, targeted around the UK National Curriculum, included 39 novels. Volunteers at Wikipedia had suggested articles considered valuable and relevant for inclusion. See here and the WP Signpost news. Novel related news Shantaram to marry Princess Gregory David Roberts, author of Shantaram, a reformed Australian convicted armed robber has just announced his engagement to Princess Francoise Sturdza of Switzerland, who he plans to marry soon. His life has changed dramatically for the best after the release of his first novel four years ago, which depicted his life in India after escaping from prison. A movie based on his novel is planned for production later this year, starring Johnny Depp in the lead role. [8] Shannara series purchased by Warner Bros The film rights to The Shannara Series by Terry Brooks have been picked up by Warner Bros. They plan to first develop The Elfstones of Shannara, the second book in the series as the opening movie and writers are now being sought for the adaptation. The first book The Sword of Shannara, was published in 1977 and was the first fantasy book to reach, and then top, the New York Times Best Seller list. Kevin is also the overall leader, with 36 points in total. All project members are encouraged to submit the articles they're working on as entries. Work has begun on a publication about the military history of Athens. A number of new subject-area contacts have been approved; we are looking for more capable editors to join this program. A brief history of the project has been compiled.		Current proposals and discussions A proposal to standardize the layout of navigational templates is being discussed. Several category reorganization and renaming proposals have been made; comments are welcome!

Project news The demand for fair use rationales for book covers has generated a discussion among wikipedians and also WP:NOVELS members. See the discussion here it has some potentially very important ideas to consider and possibly contribute to. Novel related news The Novel - (author notes by kind permission of Gregory David Roberts) What is a novel? What are the elements that must be found in any piece of writing for it to be considered a novel? I think it fair to say that traditional definitions of the word “novel” work along these lines: A novel is a fictitious prose story of book length. In my view, a novel has six basic elements: 1) It must have a society of characters; 2) They must be undergoing transformations; 3) And those must be in the course of a sustained prose narrative; 4) The sustained prose narrative must be impelled by a plot; 5) And it must be unified by clearly discernible central themes; 6) And to the extent possible, it must be universalised by a complex architecture of allegorical and symbolical sub-strata. Project news The fourth project coordinator elections have now concluded. Nine coordinators have been selected to serve for the next six months: Kirill Lokshin, Carom, FayssalF, LordAmeth, Kyriakos, TomStar81, Cla68, Eurocopter tigre, and Roger Davies. Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to all of the candidates who put themselves forward for this responsibility, and to the retiring coordinators for all of their efforts to improve the project! The contest department has completed another month of competition. The leader for this month, with 23 points, is Blnguyen; JKBrooks85 is in second place, with 17 points, and Carom is in third place, with 13 points. Carom is also the overall leader, with 45 points in total. All project members are encouraged to submit the articles they're working on as entries. The project's article tagging and assessment drivecontinues; project members are cordially invited to assist with this effort. Project news During August we signed up to the WikiProject advertising facility {{wikipedia ads}} initiative. Our tagged articles now number over 14,000 and more are being added every day. In reality the article count for our project scope is likely to be much higher so the more who can get involved and assist the process of improving the quality of the articles the better. Member news The project has currently 261 members, 7 joined & 0 leavers since the last newsletter at the start of August 2007. A number of editors have signed up to our "task forces" without signing to the main project so the figure could be slightly higher. Other news Although many editors are doing sterling work actually working on writing and maintaining articles we could always do with more volunteers to assist with the project wide tasks. Our Collaboration of the Month is in need of more suggested articles for our attention and more votes for those already proposed. Novel related news The eagerly awaited Fatal Revenant by Stephen Donaldson is ever closer now, due for release October 9, 2007 in the U.S., October 18 in the UK. As the second part of the The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever#The Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant it should seal the character of this trilogy as the closing set from this classic sequence of fantasy novels. Current debates One experienced editor has requested feedback on guidelines such as WP:FICT and WP:WAF. Check out his comments first and get your views felt. Project news The Taiwanese military history and War films task forces have been created. The contest department has completed its sixth month of competition. The leader for this month, with 57 points, is JKBrooks85; Kyriakos is in second place, with 16 points, and Blnguyen and Woodym555 are tied for third place, with 10 points each. The overall results for the past six months show JKBrooks85 in first place, with 92 points, followed by Carom, with 45 points, and Blnguyen, with 38 points. All project members are encouraged to submit the articles they're working on as entries. A stress hotline is now available for project members' use. The bulk of the project's guidelines have been moved to a separate subpage. New guidelines for flag icon use have been adopted. Current proposals and discussions A proposal to formalize the project's style guide as part of Wikipedia's Manual of Style has been made and is being discussed; comments and suggestions would be very appreciated!
Awards and honors SandyGeorgia was awarded the WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves in recognition of the instrumental role she plays in the featured article process, both by checking the project's featured article candidates to ensure that citations are formatted correctly, and by helping clear out the backlog of featured articles that no longer meet the criteria. Sandy is the first non-member of the project to receive this award.
