Sometimes referred to as goth, sometimes as punk, sometimes as alternative or new wave, Joy Division was known for its depressing music. Their most popular hit was "Love will Tear Us Apart", made more popular by the suicide of singer Ian Curtis.

Shortly after his death, they became New Order.
