San Giovanni la Punta is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Catania in the Italian region Sicily, located about 160 km southeast of Palermo and about 8 km northeast of Catania. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 20,385 and an area of 10.6 km².[3]

The municipality of San Giovanni la Punta contains the frazione (subdivision) Trappeto.

San Giovanni la Punta borders the following municipalities: Aci Bonaccorsi, Pedara, San Gregorio di Catania, Sant'Agata li Battiati, Trecastagni, Tremestieri Etneo, Valverde, Viagrande.

Famous People

San Giovanni la Punta is the native city of Padre Allegra(1907-1976) an important priest who devoted his life to the spreading of cristrian precepts in the oriental countries. He left as missionary to China as soon as he became a religious man and there he established catholic organizations in Beijing which aimed to involve people towards cristian religion. His main cultural opera has been the total traslation of the Holy Bible in Chinese language, which lasted several years. Unfortunately for him his work of missionary in China was suddenly interrupted in 1950 by the advancement on Mao troops which forced the priest to move in the near Hong Kong. Nevertheless the interrupion we went on his fundamental role of traslator of religious texts and during the following 20 years he completed and published not few books such as the Apocalipse's one and many others. His health condition became worring in 1975 and he was transferred in an hospital where he died in 1976 leaving all those people who were helped by him and particularly the Chinese population which had apprenciated his work.
