House of Romanov
The House of Romanov was the last ruling dynasty of Russia's Imperial Era. It ruled Russia for ten generations from 1616 to 1917.
It gained power when Mikhail Romanov was elected ruler of Russia in 1616 following a period of exceptional anarchy known as the "Time of Troubles". During its occupation of the throne, Russia slowly moved from a backward medieval culture to an industrial one. Yet this reform were simply not fast enough, and it ultimately fell from power during the Russian Revolution with the last emperor (not Tsar, this title was officially abolished in 1720) Nicholas II being assassinated in a cellar in Ekatarinburg, Russia.
Members of the Romanov family exist today, but even with the fall of the Soviet Union, it is unlikely that they will ever regain power, even on a constitutional basis.
