KXAN-TV, channel 36, is the NBC affiliate of Austin, Texas. It is currently owned by LIN TV, and is a sister station of The CW network affiliate KNVA. KXAN's transmitter is located on Mount Bonnell at the at the West Austin Antenna Farm, and the television studios are located on the northern edge of downtown along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, blocks from the University of Texas. Most cable systems in the Austin area carry the station on channel 4.
KXAN also operates KXAM-TV channel 14 in Llano, Texas. KXAM simulcasts KXAN programs and places local inserts into KXAN's newscasts. The station is based out of KXAN's bureau in Llano. Until 1991, it had the call letters KLNO.
History
KXAN went on the air February 12, 1965 as KHFI-TV, the second television station in Austin and an NBC affiliate (replacing a secondary affiliation with KTBC). It originally broadcast on channel 42 and was owned by the Kingsbury family, along with KHFI radio. The Kingsburys brought in Henry Tippie as a partner and moved the station, with FCC permission, to channel 36 in 1973 with a new call sign, KTVV. LIN bought the station in 1979 and changed the callsign to KXAN in 1987. The channel 42 allocation has since been occupied by KBVO-turned-KEYE.
KXAN has always been an NBC affiliate, and is one of two stations in Austin (the other being rival KVUE-TV) to retain its original network affiliation in the wake of a network swap between KTBC and KEYE in 1995.
HPN - Hill Country Paramount Network (1995-1998)
When UPN was launched in 1995, it was available on a network of low-powered TV stations called HPN (Hill Country [in place of "United"] Paramount Network), a joint partnership of KXAN and KNVA. HPN ended its affiliation with UPN in 1998; the affiliation afterwards was picked up by low powered station KVC, a sister station of KTBC, and in 2000 was picked up by KCWX (then KBEJ). (KVC went dark two years later to make way for a digital signal on channel 13 in 2003.)
The HPN translators are currently-used to repeat programming from local Telefutura affiliate KBVO-CA, also owned by LIN.
Programming
KXAN is the Austin home of the San Antonio Spurs, airing their games in the fall (preempting NBC programming). Some games air on KNVA.
Also, the station also had a strong syndicated programming lineup with shows such as Live With Regis and Kelly, The Oprah Winfrey Show - which was later picked up by KVUE, Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune.
KXAN-TV mast
KXAN's mast is located in the West Austin Antenna Farm on Mount Bonnell. The current tower, built in 1996, replaced an older tower that dated to 1964. Of the 15 towers on Mount Bonnell, KXAN's is the tallest; it is also the tallest structure in Austin.
In addition to its transmission antenna, the mast also incorporates a camera with views of downtown to the east and the hills to the west.
