Shutter Island is a recently announced crime drama slated for release sometime in 2009. It marks the fourth collaboration between director Martin Scorsese and actor Leonardo DiCaprio (the two previously worked together on Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004), and The Departed (2006)). Screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis (Alexander) will adapt the 2003 novel written by Dennis Lehane, author of Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone.

Plot summary

In the summer of 1954, U.S. Marshal Edward "Teddy" Daniels (DiCaprio) and his partner Chuck Aule are sent to investigate the disappearance of murderess Rachel Solando, who escaped from the Ashecliffe hospital for the criminally insane and is believed to be hiding out on the remote Shutter Island outside of Boston, Massachusetts. As the two marshals try to separate the truth from the lies, a hurricane bears down on the island, causing the mental patients to riot and cutting off all access to the mainland.

Production

The film will be released domestically by Paramount Pictures while Columbia Pictures will handle international distribution. The film will be co-produced by Phoenix Pictures, Scorsese's Sikelia, and DiCaprio's Appian Way Productions. Zodiac producers Mike Medavoy, Brad Fischer, and Arnold Messer will produce along with Martin Scorsese. Dennis Lehane, Laeta Kalogridis, and Louis Phillips will act as executive producers.

Scouting will begin shortly, with Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Nova Scotia listed as possible candidates for filming locations.
