Vasa praevia is a rare condition in which fetal intramembranous blood vessels traverse the fetal membranes across the lower segment of the uterus between the fetus and the cervical opening.
Presentation
These vessels may be torn at the time of labor, delivery or when the membranes rupture. It has a high fetal mortality because of the bleeding that follows. [1]
The classic triad are membrane rupture followed immediately by vaginal bleeding and fetal bradycardia.
Diagnosis
Transvaginal color flow Doppler ultrasound is often used for diagnosis. [2][3]
Treatment
Treatment with an emergency cesarean delivery is usually indicated.[4][5]
