Tlen is a generic Polish word for oxygen

Tlen is also a free-of-charge Polish instant messenger. It is currently the second most popular utility for instant messaging in Poland after Gadu Gadu, with which it is fully compatible.

The communication protocol is based on open source Jabber code, but it was modified significantly. Among other features not present in Jabber, tlen allows for voice chats, SMS sending and video conferences. The versions later than 4.0 allow for creation and usage of plug-ins. Since then more than 80 plugins were created by the community. By September 2004 there were more than 700 000 registered users of Tlen.
