Swiss Cottage tube station (1868–1940)
Swiss Cottage is a disused London Underground station. It was opened in 1868 as the northern terminus of the Metropolitan & St. John's Wood Railway, the first northward branch extension from Baker Street of the Metropolitan Railway (now the Metropolitan Line). From here the line was (starting in 1879) later extended north into Middlesex and Hertfordshire reaching Watford, Aylesbury, Chesham and Uxbridge.
In 1939 a new section of deep-level tunnel constructed between Baker Street and Finchley Road was opened for the transfer of the Metropolitan Line's services on its Stanmore branch to the Bakerloo Line. Metropolitan Line stations between Finchley Road and Baker Street were closed and a new Swiss Cottage station was opened on the Bakerloo line.
