Ran, also referred to as "the goddess of the drowned" is the moody and sometimes treacherous goddess of the seas and waters in Norse Mythology. She is the wife of Aegir. She collects the corpses of the drowned in a net.


Ran is also the title of a film by Akira Kurosawa, based on William Shakespeare's King Lear but set in medieval Japan. It won the Academy Award for Costume Design in 1985.
