El Clásico[1] (English: the classic), also known as El Súper Clásico[2] (superclassic), is the name for the rivalry between two Mexican football teams: América and Chivas de Guadalajara. The two teams are among the most successful clubs in Mexico, Chivas has won eleven championships, the most by any team, with America following closely with ten[3].
History
Club América and Chivas de Guadalajara are considered the two most popular teams in Mexico. It is unknown which team has the highest amount of fans but many believe the scales lean in favor of Chivas due to the fact that Chivas is famous for fielding only Mexican-born players, which contrasts with América, who was notorious for hiring famous foreigners. Thus, many compare this national derby to a battle between the "Hero" (Chivas) and the "Villain" (América) especially after Club América was bought by Televisa, the largest Spanish-speaking company in the world, and consequently made América the perfect rival for Chivas.
The first time both teams confronted one another was during the 1943-1944 season, were Guadalajara obtained the first victory with the score of 3-1. The rivalry surged a little later on when América in the second game between both teams, took the win with a score of 7-2. With the passing of the years, the rivalry continued growing and in 1957, Guadalajara took their revenge by beating América with a score of 7-0, the largest win between all the games disputed by these two teams. Throughout the 60's, Guadalajara had a continuous dominium over América, but again, revenge would soar and during the 70's, América turned the cards on Chivas. By the 1982-1983 season in the Mexican League, América had broken all the season records. They turned into the favorite team to win the championship but Chivas crashed all their hopes in Semifinals, coming out victorious in the second leg with a score of 3-0. América soon took revenge. In the first leg of the Final in the 1983-1984 season (the only final to ever be disputed between both teams), América tied with Chivas by the score of 2-2 in the Estadio Jalisco. Everything was to be defined in the second leg set to be played in the Estadio Azteca, which proved to be crucial as América took the win by beating Chivas 3-1.
Current Games
One of the most memorable games played between Chivas and América was disputed during the Clausura 2005 tournament taking place on March 13th in the legendary Estadio Azteca. The game iniated with a goal of Pável Pardo at the 15th minute of the game, América would then attempt to solidify the game when in the 38th minute Óscar Rojas scored the second goal taking advantage of a pass by Cuauhtémoc Blanco. During the 42nd minute of the game, with the first half about to conclude, Héctor Reynoso scored one of the most beautiful goals of his career and left the score 2-1. Francisco Palencia would score the 100th goal of his career in the minute 58th of the second half tying the score 2-2. But América would again take the lead when at the 78th minute, Pável Pardo gave an excellent pass to Claudio López who didn't waste the opportunity to penetrated the goalpost of Oswaldo Sánchez. However, things wouldn't end there, three minutes before the game ended Paco Palencia would make his 101 goal as a result of a magnificent play between Ramón Morales and Alberto Medina. The score was equalized 3-3, although Chivas could have taken the victory with yet another goal of Palencia, Guillermo Ochoa dressed himself as a superheroe and prevented the last minute score. Nevertheless, the 105,000 crowd of people who presented themselves at the Colossus of Santa Ursula and the millions of people watching the game at home, were not disappointed. See Video here
To this day, El Súper Clásico continues to raise huge excitement in the whole country as well as in other parts of the world were there are fans of either team. The intensity of the game is lived so passionately that every time these two teams dispute a game, regardless of what position they are on the charts or what level they show throughout the league, it is always considered the most important game of the season. The players know it is unforgivable to lose this game because it is more than just 3 points that are played for on the field, it is the honor and the pride that is to be achieved after coming out victorious over your biggest rival.
