Mucomyst
Mucomyst® is the brand name of acetylcysteine, which is the N-acetyl derivative of the organic amino acid cysteine. The compound is a white crystalline powder with the molecular formula C5H9NO3S5. It has a molecular weight of 163.2, and the IUPAC chemical name of N-acetyl-L-cysteine.
Mucomyst® is primarily used as an antidote in cases of poisoning (overdose) with acetaminophen (brand names Tylenol® and Dafalgan®, and also known as paracetamol, or APAP, which is short for 4-Acetyl-P-Amino-Phenol) . As its trade name suggests, Mucomyst® is also used as mucolytic to treat chronic bronchopulmonary diseases, such as emphysema, emphysema with bronchitis, chronic asthmatic bronchitis, consumption, bronchiectasis and primary amyloidosis of the lung. It is also an adjuvant in the treatment of acute bronchopulmonary disease, including pneumonia, bronchitis, and tracheobronchitis. It is a palliative for pulmonary complications of cystic fibrosis.
