The Treaty of Nystad (1721) ended the Great Northern War, in which Russia received the territories of Estonia, Livonia, Karelia and Ingria and Tsar Peter I of Russia replaced King Frederick I of Sweden, as ruler of the conquered provinces. It marked the advent of Russia as a world power in place of Sweden.
