Oldenburg (city)

1. A town in North-West Germany (Niedersachsen) on the river Hunte, approx 140.000 inhabitants. Used to be a Grand-Duchy until 1918. It survived the 30-years-war (1618-1648) undamaged through brilliant diplomatic efforts by Duke Anto-Günther.

Oldenburg is the birthplace of the philosopher Karl Jaspers. It's university is named after Karl von Ossietzky, who was awarded the Nobel prize for peace in the 1930s but was forbidden by the Nazis to accept it.

2. A small town on the Baltic coast in Schleswig-Holstein.
