Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

It was formerly part of Yugoslavia and initially claimed the name Macedonia. Right after the fountation of F.Y.R.O.M. Greece posed certain objections concearning:

  • The name. Macedonia was considered to be a greek name.
  • The symbol of the flag. The twelve ray star that was to appear on the flag was an ancient greek macedonian cymbol. It can been seen on one side of ancient macedonian coins. On the other side there is the head of Alexander the Great.
  • A reference in the constitution about reuniting the three parts of Macedonia which today belong to F.Y.R.O.M., Greece and Bulgaria.

As a result the U.N. recognised the state under the name F.Y.R.O.M., the country's flag now represents a twelve ray sun and not the star and the reference in its constitution changed so as not to reflect any territorial claims.

As of mid-2001, F.Y.R.O.M. is involved in a conflict with Albanian rebels, which is threatening to develop into civil war. The rebels demand greater rights for the Albanian minority, but the government has refused to agree to their demands.
